67 to 71 frame question

i reciently found my 67 long bed frame is bent but i found a 71 shortbed frame on the cheap . i thought i read somewhere here the frames are interchangeable with the exception of the core support mounts ? is it as simple as using the 67 rubber mounts or do i change the whole bracket ? or do i use the 71 rubber with the 67 core support ?

Re: 67 to 71 frame question

I believe the answer is yes and you will need to use the 67 mounts for the core support. Also, your frame will be power steering install ready if it wasn't power before as the 71 frame will have the dimple for the steering gear.

Not sure what metal brackets you are referring to on the 67. The rubber bushings, washers, and the 67-68 have some not quite square pieces of metal in the mounting hardware but I think the actual brackets on the frame are the same.

Good on the power steering. That is on my short list for my 67.

Re: 67 to 71 frame question

ya i ment the frame brackets sorry . i used the kit from summit for the power steering i think came from cpp . the pump brackets didnt work with the short waterpump and the fluid lines work but had to trim the inner fender to fit them . i ended up buying the stainless lineset from the parts section on here and a pump bracket as well

The radiator support brackets are different. I put a 68 frame under my 70. The 68 holes for the bushings are smaller and sit almost even with the frame. The 70 brackets bushing hole is larger and sit a little lower on the frame. I just switched the brackets over they all bolt together in the same holes. So look good they may need to be changed on yours.

Old skool is right 67 68 have a smaller hole in the rad support frame bracket 69 72 have a larger hole in the frame bracket
Poly mounts come with 69 72 hole size and instructions to cut the hole bigger or trim the locating bit off the new mounts I remember doing that with my truck in the mid 90s

This thread may save me a headache when I go to put the fenders on. I am basically in the same boat with my '67. Went to repaint it and found the frame was bent. Got a '71 and started putting it back together. From what I am reading in this thread I will need to shim the core support or move it to be even with the top of the frame. Am I correct?

My '67 frame is long gone about a year ago.

Peanut you should be able to take the core support brackets off of your 67 frame and put them on the 71 donor frame.

Keep a watch on the Parts board.
Members do part out frames from time to time.
Then you could get some front brackets from a 67.

I know of a 68 frame in a local junk yard if you need them.

Thanks for confirming that I need to change out/ shim the core support brackets guys. Right now I am focused on getting my bed finished and on the frame. I'll add yet another note to my white board on something I need to go back and address.

I appreciate the offer BigBird but I need to keep my focus on the bed right now. I am the type of person if I start jumping around to different parts of the truck I lose track of what I need to do or have done.

Well it looks like I don't need to do anything. The core support brackets on '71 frame I have are even with the top of the frame rail. So I should be good to go.:metal:
