The Color of Money
 

Hi my name is Geoff, and I'm addicted to Chevy trucks. My story starts in October 2005. I was looking to sell my 2001 Silverado LT, buy a 67-72 Chev work truck / winter beater and start the search for my 1966 Chevelle convertible project. Well, the Chevelle is going to have to wait because in my search for a work truck, I came across a 1970 Chev shortbox that I couldn’t pass up.

The truck had been sitting for a while so I did a bunch of major maintenance items and drove it for a while. In March of 2006, I took the truck off the road and took it to some friends’ shop to re-vamp the drivetrain with a newer style 5-bolt, disc brake front end, power brakes, a new 3:73 posi and new 5 bolt axles. We also installed drop spindles and did a rear axle flip to bring the truck down a little more. Our weather is pretty hot so I also installed a new 4-core radiator and a Vintage Air Sure-Fit A/C system.

The truck worked great and I put a lot of miles on it in the summer of 2006 driving it down to car shows in Post Falls Idaho, Yakima Washington and plenty of local shows in the Okanagan Valley. The friends I do runs with all have very nice vehicles and I felt out of place so I decided to do a full frame-off restoration. I pulled the truck off the road in late October of 2006 and started the tear-down process. It was a long haul but I pulled it off in 10 months doing most of the work by myself.

I don’t have a lot of pictures of the finished project yet… It’s only been on the road for a few weeks. I will put together some more pictures of the truck, and provide some details of the build but for now, here are some photos we took a few weekends ago in a friend’s back yard.

I have taken the truck to a few local shows in the past couple of weeks and had great response from everyone. In fact, at a small local show in Summerland (135 vehicles), I took the “Best Pickup Truck” award. It felt pretty good knowing all my hard work was noticed.

You did a great job with it. Congrats on the award, I like the pic beside the old sedan. Get us somemore like that.

Looks great! Did you put a '72 rearview mirror in it? Just curious if you are trying to go all 72 with it. Did you put 72 'deluxe' door panels in it? I like that level of attention to detail. Nice work :metal:

As some of you have noticed. The truck started as a '70 but is a lot more like a '72 now. Actually, there isn't much left of the original truck. The truck I tore apart looked good on top but was pretty rotten. A guy I know had a complete '72 cab and front clip so I bought that to give myself a good solid starting point.

I owe you guys a lot more pics and will try to get those this weekend. Basically I did a rod-storation. The interior is pretty much factory with the exception of a bench seat out of a '97. I will be getting a custom leather interior done this winter. Body mods include shave stake pockets, shaved tailgate handle (with a reverse handle kit), shaved marker lights, shaved firewall and shaved cargo light (with a 3rd brake light in its place). I installed air bags on all 4 corners, updated the steering with a new box and all new Borgeson steering components, rebuilt the van tilt column that was in the truck, built up a small block with the Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, cam, intake, full roller rockers, a March Performance serpentine setup, Edelbrock ceramic shorty headers, ceramic coated exhaust and lots of other bling in the engine compartment. I got really carried away... Once I started, I couldn't stop.

It's not from any particular vehicle. It is loosely (and I emphasize loosely) based on the factory Olive Metallic that these trucks were painted. I love the factory olive but have a friend with a '67 shortbox that has that color on his truck so, of course, I couldn't paint mine the same. The color was picked from a BASF (Diamont) paint chip board. I think the code is BASF MG601-10. I've got the info at home if you are interested.

Thanks to everyone for all the compliments. I decided to go with the peep mirrors because I couldn't make up my mind on a solid mounted mirror. They're nice and easy and you don't have to drill any holes. After living with them for a few weeks, I think I like them enough to make it a permanent solution.

Very nice truck . I read on another thread that you have about an inch clearance from front tire to the wheel well. What size tire wheel combo are you running?

Probably more like a half an inch up front... The tires are just about touching the inners. It's a little hard to measure with the tire filling up the wheel well. I am running 17x8" wheels with 4.5" backspacing front and back... 255-50-17's up front and 275-55-17's on the back. The front rim/tire combination works well but I might go with a little less backspacing... On hard turns, the inside of the wheel comes into contact with the lower control arm because of the drop spindles. As far as the back goes, the tires are a little tall (275-50-17's look much better IMO) and I definitely need a wider wheel. I will probably go with a new set of 18's next year.

Thanks, that is helpful information there. It's not always easy finding the perfect tire wheel combe. Actually probably the hardest decision to make since the wheels can make or brake the look of the truck.

You're soooo right. The wrong wheels, tires and stance can make the nicest vehicle look goofy. I'm too much of a perfectioninst for my own good so that is why I am going to change the wheels and tires. As I said, the front size is great but the back is too tall and "skinny" (because of the narrow wheel). IMO, See-Ten has pretty much got the perfect wheel-tire combo and stance on his truck. There are some pictures at the end of this thread (if you havent seen them already).
