well I took my own advice and walked away from that pesky driver side kick panel and after a couple days gave it another try, and low and behold I manged to will her out, complements of a long flat screw driver

didn't even have to remove the parking brake, though I got her out of the hole with the brake disengaged, and pulled her all the way out with it engaged

brains over brawn (this time... LOL)

now what you may notice is that the driver side kick panel was a bit brittle on the bottom, and that had me worried, but as it turns out after a simple trim with some scissors there was plenty of meat on it to save it

the gasket around the air vent valve now that's another story, for some reason the one on the passenger side may be saveable but the one on the driver side parished

unless I am reading that wrong LMC Truck wants $30 bucks for just the air vent valve, page 94 http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cc/full.aspx?Page=94

... they gotta at least kiss you first! jk

ok so here is the look at the evil twins side by side, they will also be getting the Dupli-Color or Dupa-Color as I like to call it (for my Polish Brethren) stain treatment like the door panels did

we'll see how they turn out

Re: Restoring Rusty

OK, so I went a little crazy on the interior today, (taking things apart is just so much fun, oh look that's only held on with three screws...) and decided to remove the visors as well, I justified it by thinking, hey if I am painting the kick panels I might as well paint these too, I am not a big fan of storing already sprayed / used aerosole cans (even after flipping them upside down to clear the valve properly, I just prefer a fresh can)

I know this is boring, but stay with me now...

here they are side by side before and after the bucket of plain water and paper towel treatment

I think I will try to find a better passenger side visor as this one may be passed it already, and I can get past the mold? but its got that crease in it and it's torn a bit

ok enuff of that girlie interior stuff... what I really wanted to do today is warm up to the big Valentine's Day three day weekend big job (rear main oil seal replacement) by cleaning the radiator shroud a bit, I just got tired of looking over it / passed it at that shinny carburetor it just wasn't working for me

Gregski 02-11-2015 10:40 PM

Re: Restoring Rusty- Radiator Shroud

2 Attachment(s)
in case you were wondering, and I was, if the radiator shroud can come out without taking the fan out, it can (brilliant and proper engineering)

the radiator shroud is held in with two 3/8th screws on top and two metal clips on the bottom (one of mine was broken, good to know I will pick one up at the junkyard this weekend)

removing this solid piece was simple and easy and did I mention I love working on this truck, this shroud is hefty and sturdy as well

Only half way through your forum so far, but wanted to say that you've inspired me and have me really excited to get working on my old stepside. Sadly, it's still the middle of winter and Old Blue is hibernating for the time being. But you're doing some great work here.

Hahaha, great quote. To answer that, in the words of the great Ricky Bobby, "I wanna go fast!"

Although I did manage to get some minor interior work done in 20 degree weather a while ago. Despite being called crazy by my dad.

Great quote, Greg. I'll have to dig that movie out of my collection. The shroud looks a lot cleaner. Are you going to repaint it? I'll be honest, I don't much like the caddy air cleaner. Doesn't look like it belongs on a truck.

I may consider making one now. Seems fun and helpful. And let me say, after hours of reading your entire forum (which I don't regret at all), I've added quite a bit to my own never-ending to do list. So I'll raise one to you and Rusty :barn: And quoting another great, "Keep on, keepin' on!"

Re: Restoring Rusty

aC/DC (damn autocorrect) she shook me all night long.

The fan looks good, and I know you don't paint in winter. :). If you ever discover sandblasting and por-15, you'll never get anything done. When I had my 64 all apart, I sand blasted everything. That took some time, but the results were worth it. On a hoist, the underside looks new.

Stay classy... You sound like a will ferrel aficionado. :)

Your fan shroud turned out really good. Just in case it tries to fade back out on you, try this:

http://plastikote.com/products/Speci...per-Paint.html

It does a fantastic job and does not peel, flake, or scratch off.

I refinished the one on my '85 and it looks like new, has that semi gloss OEM finish to it.

I agree about that caddy air cleaner. But I am enjoying the build. I love it when some brings back old running iron. One thing that is sort of a trademark on my vehicles is a set of caddy triple horns. nothing sounds sweeter and people move when they hear them. Both my 77 square and my 81 CJ7 run them. They are getting hard to find though, Cadillac stopped using them in the mid 80's.

Jake Wade 02-12-2015 09:55 PM

Re: Restoring Rusty

Speaking of horns, we got this crazy truck driver around here that passes by regular on short hauls, must be friends with one of the neibours, anyway, he has a genuine set of Kansas City Southern train horns on his Peterbuilt, Talk about get your attention!

Re: Restoring Rusty - GMC Tailgate

2 Attachment(s)
so decided to do a recon mission to one of the junk yards during lunch time today, just to know which ones to hit this weekend on account of that 50% off sale

so I am walking the yard, (I know it like the back of my hand) and I don't see any 73-87 trucks burbans nothin, usually there is at least four, then I see one, in the very last row, it's an 80 GMC

I walk around the back to see if it has a GMC tailgate and low and behold not only is there one, but someone has already unbolted it, it's just laying there in the bed

well they did that to yank the latch and the linkage, but for $37 bucks, I decided to buy it anyway

like my buddy says "even a blind squirrel finds a nut some times"

Gregski 02-13-2015 02:17 AM

Re: Restoring Rusty

2 Attachment(s)
don't get me wrong I'm happy as a clam with this tailgate, I really wanted one with the GMC in the middle and not off to the side, and I found one, anal I know

but anyway, now the real conundrum begins, this may be a "Second Design" tailgate and I kept my link assemblies but not the latches, man I don't even know if there are first and second design links, oh well I'll figure it out
