Frame numbers?
 

I found these numbers in the middle of my frame on my 2 wd 1972 blazer. Any one know anything about them?

I have answered your question.

At this point in time it would be difficult to ascribe more detail than that. Typically it would be obscure lot numbers, component or uplevel part numbers, manufacturers trademarks or other arcane information that was used for problem diagnosis or quality metrics and is not, nor intended to be, useful beyond the time of manufacture.

Much of the manufacturing process occurs with the frame upside down. This carries over into the vehicle assembly plant as well, where the frame starts off upside down in order to allow gravity to help hold the front and rear suspension in place until they can be attached and torqued. As a result, most wax crayon markings (like build sequence numbers, or option content, or inspection marks) are written early in the process and appear upside down once the vehicle is completed.

You could make up some kind of meaning, if you like; no one would be able to prove you wrong.

Unless you run across some old guy with a stellar memory who worked at AO Smith back in the 1960's/1970's. Which would be my luck.

Way to go Keith. You said it perfectly. Spoken like someone has been there. I only hope that they are listening and understand. Most if not all factory numbers are only meaningful to the assembly line personnel. They were never meant to have any other meaning.

I worked in automotive manufacturing for 30 years, and what Keith said is correct. Those numbers represent the "options" on that given frame. Those numbers may specify if it's a 2WD vs 4WD, or if it's got certain holes or brackets for other things. Unlike the early 70's where there might have been a handful of frame variants, today there could be 50 different things that make the frames unique even though they look identical. On the newer truck frames they use a decal with both an internal numbering system and bar code that the line worker can see to determine which component goes to that particular frame. It still amazes me how such a complex assembly plant can spit out a vehicle every 50-60 seconds.

Those #'s may not mean anything, but I still documented them and wrote them down in my trucks history book.
