Need engine ID help
 
So looking to buy a 235 from a guy. It casting number of 836233 which puts it to a 55-57 engine. He said it came from a 57.

The distributer plate showed 82677. was expecting more letters.

So my assumption is that this was a 57 engine but a warranty or new block recast of August 26 1977.

I was hoping to identify it had hydrolic lifters but can't right now.

Any ideas, input, or thought to confirm this?

According to what I see there an 836--- casting number is gong to be a mid 30's engine.
I have to believe the guy is trying to sell you a bill of goods. or bought something on someone else's claim and is now trying to sell it as what he bought it for.

According to this from Rock Auto an original 57 235 distributor should have a number that starts with 111 and is 7 digits long.

Now the hard ball question. Are these numbers you have seen with your own eyes or are these numbers that the seller is giving you with or without photos of the numbers?

I can only go off pictures, he lives 2.5 hrs away and haven't looked yet.

I was hoping the cast numbers that seem to have a S or 9 matches to the same 3836233 cast number on the same list you provided. Which shows 55-57 235.

Thoughts?

The 82667 is a stamped serial number not a casting number. What that tells you is that it was the 81666th 235 built in that plant for 1956.

3836233 is the casting number that you are looking for. That if you looked at the links I posted is a 56 car 235 that should have hydraulic lifters.

3836233 block was used from 55-57, its a 235, 150hp. Still need the stamped suffix code behind the distributor to determine the original application. Typically they look like F123X, Engine factory followed by build date (month/day) and then suffix code showing application. From the pictures it looks like it was a car engine- hot air choke carburetor, long and swept back road draft tube and electric oil pressure sender.

If it is in good shape it should be a bolt in.

It already has the bracket on the front for the front motor mount.

As MNJ said you really need the suffix code to tell exactly what it left the factory in.

I'd want to paint it the correct gray or blue for an AD engine but that is my personal thing. Engines like this with off the wall paint jobs always make me ponder a bit. If the rig it was pulled from is there and the paint combo matches or jives with that paint that takes a lot of the pondering out.

Still actual condition and what the seller can document to as for it's internals and miles. mean a lot on price.

One thing that will save a lot of headaches in the long run is if you buy one of these plates that puts the earlier water pump on the 55 and up 235 and helps the fan clear the radiator without a hassle and keeps you from having to shorten the shaft on the water pump.

Well worth the 39.00 plus the price of a new pump in the hassles it saves. I wish I had known about them when I put a 56 engine in my friend's 53 that now belongs to one of my former students who worked on the truck in the early 80's.

Not all timing gear plates were drilled for motor mount holes. This being a 55-57 block it has the bosses for the side motor mounts (see picture of the GM casting number) and won't have holes for the center mount as shown in the attached photo. The 54 and earlier blocks did not have these block bosses and used the front and center mount. Over at Stovebolt they have some tech tips on modifying the front timing gear plate to use the front mounts.

By looking at his photos I can't tell if that plate is drilled for mounts but it isn't hard to figure out what you need to do or drill the holes for the mount. I've done a couple of them over the years.
