Classic Trucks: Other Makes

I think I like any truck made before '73. Still All-American. Still built for the working man, with the later end gaining enough comfort and style to rival the trucks built post-'72 well into the '80s, when GM led the way into the modern era of trucks with their 'giant step' '88 design
So, back to the earlier "other makes". I did a vintage 4wd thread with the same theme in the 4wd & Off Road forum and it became a favorite for many. This thread is for 2wd-only. If you want to see or post 4wd pictures please go visit the Vintage 4wd thread. Thanks I'll start with some I have always like for looking like trucks that most always said were ugly. Of course nowadays with interest in classic trucks coming into the mainstream with vengeance, you'll see them all getting "slammed with modern engines and O/D crammed" :cool:. '57-'60 Ford F100 |

I had a yellow '61 shortbed when I was in Humboldt Co. These pictures are it's first ride with new paint up to Williams Creek. I put chrome smoothies on it within days after that picture. 259 V8/spd + o/d |

One of the guys in town back in my hay day had a internatioal truck like this one,, except it was painted Plum Purple like the Cuda. The motor was one of the Hemi's of that year Attachment 2037196 |

oohhhhh, so cool. Possibly the finest styled pickup ever. I seen custom late-'30s Ford pickups using highly styled car noses. Basically styled after the Coupe Expresses. This one may be photoshopped. The wheels & tires definitely ain't right
Attachment 2037216 Now there ware many Australian Utes that could claim the high style mark, but for us USA guys those were the exception to the rule Attachment 2037217 Before I went to California I had a '47 Studebaker M5 with a Vette 283/4spd. The rest of the truck was unchanged. It had bare black steelies with about 8" wide tires. It looked similar to this one but was blue Attachment 2037218 How about the Nash pickups? Now that would be a stand-out in any crowd |

A guy the next street north of me had a ~'70 Dodge 3/4T for sale for a long while. I used to walk by it walking the streets (with the dog) and did consider seeing what he wanted for it, but just couldn't see it in my driveway. It was painted (poorly) Plum Crazy. It eventually sold. I know the ins and outs of that era of Dodges, as I had to fix whatever came into the shop, but I didn't want to sell out; I wanted another Chevy, or a GMC. :lol:

I had a neighbor that had 2 of these Hudson "Big Boys" in his driveway. He never did anything with either of them.

Those are very cool. But those are as funky as the Studebaker Coupe Express is glorious. I'd expect the unknowing to tell the owner, "Cool car. Did you make that?" or "Hey, good job on the rat rod. Almost looks factory" :lol:

The 53-56 Ford trucks are classic for sure. This 56 is very much like my first truck save for the wheels. I bought it stock, running for $300 in 1973 and began modding it 4 months later.

The 53-56 Fords were thought to be some of the best looking older Ford trucks ever, right after the 40. ;)

The '40 Ford Pickup, Coupe, and Sedan were childhood favorites on my. I still get excited about every 39/40 Pickup I see.
About my favorite pickup body in the world, at least in the top 100, is the E-series Studebaker. I had the one before and the one after, but never owned one of these yet |

this is a 1951 International i picked up as a roller. Motor was siezed and half apart, so i am doing a chevy swap with it. Its currently sitting on a SWB squarebody chassis with a 350 th 350 combo as opposed to the 90 hp inline 6 that was in it this is the original truck

I bought a 1939 Ford years ago, when I was young and didn't know what I was getting into. I had to sell it because there was no way I was even going to be able to finish it. I was really bummed when I had to do that. Now, if I had it, it wouldn't be going anywhere. I'd do the best and get it running. I often wonder what happened to it or how it ended up.

I have always liked these little Datsuns. My friend had one kinda like this back in high school in the 80s. It was a fun little truck. Believe me, two guys & their dates could fit in the cab of these things, but it was much better if the passenger’s date sat in his lap and the driver’s date sat straddling the stick shift. We both made out fine in that little truck. :) OMG I kept looking and found this picture of one EXACTLY like we used to cat around in. Same color & wheels. My dad had a green Datsun just like that when I was a kid. He had a red one that looked somewhat similar to the red one in your post but not as nicely done. I was in college at the time and it was dark when I got home but I noticed the truck had an odd stance for a Datsun. Asked my dad about it and he said, "Let's go for a ride and you can drive." Holy cow what a death trap. Had a small block V8 in it and the front suspension and rear end out of some Nova. Scary quick and no idea what the top end was. He took a bit of money from teenagers in their hot rods in that little truck. |

I test drove a used green Datsun PU (610?) in '76. It had aluminum slots and I thought it looked cool. I liked the 4wd conversions in the '70s they did on the Nippon haulers, including Chevy LUV. When Toyota came out with their factory job in '78 I really wanted one. All said and done, I always needed more truck but thought it would be neat to have a mini 4wd PU. Pretty go where a Jeep could go, size wise, but more useful and practical. The only Japanese product I ever bought, and first brand new vehicle, was an '87 Suzuki Samurai for my girlfriend to drive to downtown Baltimore for the clinical segment (final) of her nursing school. She couldn't miss a class due to weather, or anything, and I wanted to know she could make it down and up without leaving her stranded. It was cheap, still had round headlights & carburetor, and America made nothing to compare. Some said Jeep, but no comparison in size, price, or MPG. I figured I'd make a fun off road toy out of it later on. Never happened

Cool thread! Here are a few of mine from decades ago. A couple of 56 Fords, one with a 440 magnum, the other with a 302 and top loader 4 spd.
