1972 C10 or C20 help

Hello everyone,
First I would like to thank you guys in advance for answers. I been following this site for a while and have enjoyed all the stories, info and pictures you guys provide. I finally created my account mainly because now I am in search of my own truck. I know what I want but need help. I been searching my local Auto trader, Craigslist (San Diego, CA), and other sites to help me find the right truck for me. Today I drove to see what I thought is a 1972 Long bed C10. Well that's what the advertisement said. I took a printed copy of the Vin Decoder found here on this site and well all the numbers point to be a C20. How accurate is this decoder? The current owner "was told it's a C10" which he got from his father in law. The truck was brought from Washington to California about 2 years ago and the Pink Slip does not state model size. I took a couple of pictures and wrote down every number. Vin# CCE242Z175431 C=? C=4x2 E=V-8 Gas 2=3/4 ton?????? 4=pick up 2=1972 E=? Z=Fremont Model # CE20934 C=4X2 E=V-8 2=3/4 Ton?????? 09=54"-59" 34=Fleetside Pickup GVW Manufactured: 6200 Lbs GVW Maximum : 7500 Lbs Other info: 350 V-8 WITH TURBO AUTO TRANS BX2-B SIDE MLDG-WIDE LWR F51-FRONT AND REAR SHOCK ABS G50-HEAVY REAR SPRINGS YG7-SPEC PROMOTION PKG-B Z62-CUSTOM DELUXE EQUIP So is this a 3/4 ton like the Decoder is telling me???? Other than the Bed and frame size (and WEIGHT) what else would need to be done to convert to a C10? Possible? Thanks, |

Re: 1972 C10 or C20 help
Yes, it is a 3/4 ton truck. Easiest way to tell is that it will have 8 lug wheels. Does it have a plaid colored seat? It looks like a Highlander from the SPID options listed.

Re: 1972 C10 or C20 help
Welcome to the board neighbor! I am up the 15 fwy from you in Corona/Riverside. I converted my 3/4 ton LWB truck to a 1/2 ton SWB truck. Click on my build thread for pics and info.
I also moved this thread for you to the main message board. You will get a lot more responses. |
Re: 1972 C10 or C20 help
Another quick way to tell is by the GVW Rating. A 3/4 Ton will have a Rating of 7500. A 1/2 Ton will be 5000.

Re: 1972 C10 or C20 help
Thanks LeddZepp, I'm actually in North County San Diego (Vista) great to see other member close to my area. I check out your build and read every post, very impressive. For me that might be more work then I can handle at the moment. I will keep searching.
As far as the bench seat it was a two tone color, white and blue. I was very impress that the seat was original and had no holes or rips on it. The previous owner knew how to take care of the vehicle. |

Socal, Hello and :welcome2: to the board.:) Congrats on the truck, looks good. You do have a C20 there and it's a Highlander!!! Congrats again. Here is a thread to give you some info about the Highlander option.

Re: 1972 C10 or C20 help
That seems to be a well optioned truck...with the Highlander pkg too.
If the price is right this could be a good one. Any reason not to have a 3/4? |
