not too bad, I grounded the welds down a bit but not totally flat so that I wouldn't weaken the welds nor be unable to find them later if I needed to drill them out (that's my excuse anyway)

this side already developed a hairline crack in the safety fold, so I bugger welded it up

and just like on the other side we ground the surface to bear bare (?) metal prior to welding

but I wasn't gonna let this stop me, so I replaced the Lincoln .035 artillery with the .025 caliber (i.e. all that I had on hand) and grabbed the gun for the home stretch

I must say I like how the .025 lays down spot welds, now I'm sure if I knew how to fandangle the knobs on Big Red properly I could achieve the same results with the .035 but still the .025 agrees with me just the same

since this project was sapposed to be done in August, with the paint still wet I hollered at my soon to be 17 millenial to come downstairs and help me flip this pancake over

we're gonna lossen up that surface rust with some 220 sand paper

a little stare and compare, what a difference 5 minutes with the orbital sander makes

and then it was time for some Phosphoric acid treatment from Home Depot ($5.00, I'm looking at you $25 dollar Metal Re$cue), this is the potion I should have used the first time on my original hood, but I messed up and used muriatic acid instead (stupid me, should have paid more attention in Chemistry class)

Still loving it Gregski. Curious though - what are you going to do with the A833? I understand why you might want a trans with closer ratios but are you going to rebuild it and store it?

Yes I plan on rebuilding the A833 next month. I always planned on rebuilding it if for no other reason than to see it's guts and diagnose the problem. However since the Saginaw is making that dreaded gear noise in all but 1st & Reverse gears, it is coming out and the A833 is going back in.

I plan on trying 4.11 POSI gears so the A833 overdrive transmission makes more sense anyway.

And I would be lying if I was not trolling Craigslist for a MUNCIE M21

you all know how i love to use the white paper towels, however for final wipe before painting I prefer the blue ones cause they don't leave behind as much fuzz

I like to stay within the same paint ecosystem ie, use the same brand primer, paint, and clear coat, and I happen to like that Krylon semi flat black so that dictates I use Krylon products, however Krylon didn't offer a black primer at Pep Boys so I went with this Dupa Color primer, and since we won't be using Krylon paint anyway, it really doesn't matter

I want to use black primer because that's what lurks beneath my factory green

two light coats followed by one medium coat, simple

so lets see how it does

What? That's it? Yes the purpose of the first light coat is simply to make the area tacky, that's all, that's it.

Rusty is going to look great with the new hood! When do you start getting humidity issues with paint? And nicely done on the home-fab hood stiffeners. I folded a guy's hood for him at the Full Serve pumps at Chevron in the summer of '87...

are you kidding me right now bro, no seriously, did you just UPS some rain to us, I woke up this morning to rain drops, 5:50 AM, so I ranned outside in my choneys to roll up the winderz on my truck in the driveway and I wanted to roll up in a fetal position and weep like a baby cause last night I spent a couple hours block sanding the hood outside on those saw horses so I can paint it this morning

well here we go, 10 cans and $180 dollars later, that's 8 cans of 4oz regular mix and 2 cans of semi gloss mix of 50% paint (2oz) and 50% flattner (2oz) to give it that SEMI 40 year aged in the sun matched look, ha ha so just a reminder

I am using single stage OMNI paint which is PPG's lesser known step half brother on his uncles side

Reminder: just cause you buying a 12oz can of aerosole paint don't mean you gettin' 12oz of paint, no sir, that can "empty" comes with about 7.5oz of special sauce to which the paint store adds 4oz of the paint you choose

so I did it again, once again I picked the windiest day thus far this year to paint outside on, honestly I don't know what possessed me to do it, I didn't notice till the first coat was on, and by that time I was determined to get this August project done in September, ha ha

note that trashcan wind wall behind the subject, it worked as effectively as a screen door on a submarine

How windy was it? It was so windy, that at one point I started panting down wind, ha ha.

Last time I bathed my hood hinges and springs in acid, it weakened the springs, seriously. Now maybe it was cause I left them sitting in the acid/water juice for too long I don't know, but either way I didn't want to ruin my new(ish) set of hinges so I splurged on Metal Rescue from Home Depot and added enough water to submerge the pieces all the way, I think it was like a 4:1 ratio of water to solvent in the end, and it worked great

I thought I took a pic of the hinges in the bath, but I guess I didn't

I have a place on the side of the house where there are walls on three sides, well my garage on one side and the gate and the fence/neighbors house, so it's a nice nook to paint in

so with the help of Pontiac Mike we got the hood and the new old hinges installed, and it fits pretty good and actually pops up when you press the lever to open the hood, wow no more flat screw driver prying it up routine

so glad this project is over and done with, nothing like doing something over that you have already done did before

the swirls on the hood are actually dust, the lawn guy came during the week and kicked up dust and I tried to wipe it down but didn't get it all off

hood matches the newly painted fender but not the door cause the door hasn't been re sprayed yet, maybe some day

there's my buddy, I no longer need to keep the blinders shut, cause he was so ugly
