Spark plug wires with ram horns

What style and how are you guys with ram horn exhaust manifolds running your wires ?

Re: Spark plug wires with ram horns

I have a HEI distributor with ram horns and just went to the local parts store and got wires for a 1975 Corvette. They fit pretty well in the factory location.

Using the factory length, down and around he back of the block, along the sides, up through the motor mounts for the front 4 cylinders,

This is exactly what I did when I swapped to HEI.

Pictures of my 350 with Vortec heads, HEI and 1975 Vette wires run as original.

Pretty much the same. I used Taylor wires for a 1976 Corvette.

I’ve used the vette wires/routing with ram horns on numerous vehicles, they work well. The last 15 years or so I’ve been buying bulk wire, ends, boots and making my own. You get a custom set with each wire the correct length routed the way you want. And when you get a burnt wire or boot your only minutes from a new wire. Little expensive out of the gate. The key to making your own is the stripper/crimper, don’t cheap out if you that route. Good luck, Lee

I noticed everyone keeps stating vette wires. Isn't this the way they were ran from the factory on our trucks? Only asking that it wasn't a corvette only thing? Or saying that to get the correct length?

Our trucks didn't come equipped with HEI distributors so there are no "stock HEI" truck wires available . Hence using the later model HEI "Vette" wires . :chevy:

Gotcha. I know there was no HEI, I was more talking about the routing vs type, Thanks

Re: Spark plug wires with ram horns

Well that helps out alot. Mine on the truck now are way long too long. so I guess I will get some for a vette.

Re: Spark plug wires with ram horns

Running wires like in the pics (stock and corvette routing) will take a longer wire than you usually get at the box parts stores (which people usually run over the tops of valve covers).

That doesn't make sense...

I don't remember which set of Taylor wires I ordered (may have been corvette or may not have been). BUT I do remember that they were one of the longest custom sets available. ie.....the longest set you could buy with the ends already attached should work pretty well.

Here is the chart with the length of each wire. Note that some are coil and some are HEI, so be sure to double check before ordering. I ordered mine off of Amazon after getting the number from the Taylor website.

Which part number did you get and have you installed them yet?

Taylor lists several part numbers. This is copied from the pdf

Where can I get the brackets circled in the pictures? Haven't had any luck in my searches.

Thanks

These ones from Classic Parts of America appear to be correct:

4-wire holders for bellhousing area of block: http://www.classicparts.com/1958-69-...ctinfo/83-386/

2-wire holders (these attach using the same bolts that hold the heat shields) http://www.classicparts.com/1958-72-...ctinfo/83-387/

And if you don't already have them, these are the head shields that were used with the rams horn manifolds: http://www.classicparts.com/1957-72-...ctinfo/83-389/

The original spark plug wire routing also used a couple of these clips (one on each side) to hold the wires down near the oil pan rail. They attach using the existing oil pan bolts: http://www.classicparts.com/1958-72-...ctinfo/83-388/

There were also a couple of 4-wire holders that attached to the engine using the rear corner intake manifold bolts. I don't think I've ever seen a reproduction of the driver side one. But there is a reproduction of the somewhat similar looking holder used on some cars ... it attaches to a valve cover bolt instead and looks like this: http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....2a~Z5Z5Z5AAGRQ

On the passenger side, this style of bracket was used with manual transmissions:http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....5AAHNM~Z5Z5Z53
I think automatics had the pass side plug wire holder spot welded to the dipstick tube (at least cars did anyway ... not sure about trucks).

I am running Corvette rams horn manifolds on my 350. I used 2 right side manifolds - both point straight down.

I used after market wire looms mounted above the manifolds instead of routing below the manifolds.

My truck is no where near stock, so it does not bother me to use something different.

Re: Spark plug wires with ram horns

Zeroman. I want to run my wires above the ram horns too and want straight plug wire terminals like yours. I see you used MSD wires. If you don't mind, what part number and application are those?

Re: Spark plug wires with ram horns

I found my receipt from when I ordered a set from Lectric Limited. They fit well and I have not had any issues. They are the length for stock routing.
