Carb / Starting problems

OK, put my 1983 4x4 swb silverado(350 , 700R4) away last fall, got it out. (checked the oil, tires, water level, tranny fluid, etc.) yesterday for the first time this year. Put in the fully charged battery set the choke and no start. Pumped it a few times then no start. Took the cleaner off and gave it a shot of gas directly into the 4 barrel Quadrajet. This time it fires right up and runs fine. So far its good. I drove it for about 5 miles and decided to stop and put in some fresh gas. I was on the tank that was about 1/4, filled it up , this time it started right up. Drove about 1 miles, then it kills. As I was coasting I tried to refire it, it fired a few times but would not start. I had to get out and give it another shot of gas direclty down the hold again, it starts right up and away I went. I drove for about 50 mils and no problems. I shot it off once I got back and again it would not start until I gave it another shot.

Any ideas? I want to keep it original so not going to replace the Quadrajet, not an option. Maybe it needs to be rebuilt? Seems the fuel pump is ok? Not sure at this point.

Thanks in Advance for your ideas

Seems like your carb might need a rebuild like you said. I had to rebuild my edelbrock twice within six months for letting it sit too long. The ethanol turns into a jello like substance after sitting a while and just causes all kinds of issues with fuel systems.

Sounds like an accelerator pump problem .

I would check the obvious first - remove air cleaner lid - is the choke valve stuck all the way shut?

Hey thanks for that tip. I looked at my choke and the wire had came lose. Not sure if that was it or not. I will test it when it warms backup here again. only 47 today.
