Question Axle/Wheel Seal 14B ff

Hey guys, I just got new axle/wheel seals (Timken 2081)

https://www.amazon.com/Timken-2081-S...omotive&sr=1-1

There is a flat side and the other side has a slight bevel at the inner diameter near the rubber seal. My question is: Is there an inside and outside to these. There's no markings to indicate such but the rubber seems to be angled or biased to one side (the side with the slight bevel) and I'm not certain if that goes in toward the differential or not. I believe that when I press it in, I should be looking at the flat side of the seal. Would that be correct? Thanks

I second that Yes:chevy:

Here is a side cutaway of a seal.

The lip that has the spring above it is to seal the oil from escaping (Hopefully);)

The other lip is the Dust (Brake dust ) seal.

Hope this helps.

Yes, in the hub, with bearings fully packed in grease as per the service manual.

Thank you guys for the responses. I almost got it right. Installed the seal the correct direction and lubed bearing with 90 wt. Sure hope that works.

I worked on service trucks,
Years ago that had 14bolt FF.

The Company was so cheap.
I would jack the truck up /So much to tilt the rear-axle.

Wait till the oil flowed to the bearings :uhmk:

Then jack the other side up just to save money on the Grease;)

This is why I remember that #2081

Thanks for the advise. I'll get some grease.

I wasn't trying to be cheap, just had the seal out, had to wait a week to get a new one (Had to order it) My truck is my only means of gettin 'round. Had no grease on hand. However, I did have some 90 wt.

Use the updated seals from the 2001+ trucks next time. You’ll need one for say 2006 Silverado HD with a 6.0, that should still have the 10.5” 14 bolt ff. They are a two piece seal and are a direct swap to the old style. I use them every time I get into 14 bolt hubs and have never had a leak since.

Much thanks. Had I known that, it may have been a part I could have found at the local parts store instead of ordering online.

Yep that’s the one, however I use the genuine gm seals, I’ve got a part number written down in the shop. Let me see if I can round it up today.

that would be a cool thing and much appreciated. Knowing there's a seal that works well and has been tested is a bookmark item. Thank you

You bet, GM 15823962
Heres one place that has them online: https://www.drivetrainamerica.com/15...eel-2001-2010/

The pictures make it look like a 1 piece seal but it is not. It’s got it’s own build in wear sleeve of sorts that installs on the axle. With My 1998 K2500 I could never seem to keep a hub seal in the passenger side for anymore than about 20,000 miles before they would start seeping oil into the brakes. After 100,000 miles of this, I swapped to the new style seals after being aggravated and having tried everything I could think to get them to seal. Since swapping to the new style, I’m 50,000 miles in and no issues since. Like I said I use them every time I tear into a set of hubs now.
