Condition is irrelevant...barely there, or 100% complete.

They don't have to be yours...if you find 'em, post 'em up!

Please share any stories, rescues, details, and/or locations that you can. If you have a build thread to one that you have saved, post up a link instead of using this thread for your build-up.

If you know where an old, crusty square body is resting, please snap a photo of it when you can, and share it with us.

I think these old square body pics make for better wallpapers than the blinging new ones so feel free to save any of them that you want!

While this thread is located in the '73-'87 section, feel free to post up ANY year of Chevy truck.

Time for part two

CHOMPY Hard At Work

It's hard to imagine any junkyard crushing un damaged rust free cabs but it's a daily event .

I needed a cab for my 1969 C/10 and my favorite junkyard said "begins at $700 and goes up " ~ instead I bought a near perfect cab with title for $350 and the junkyard got $35 in scrap value.....

Some are kinda stupid ~ when I ran a junkyard I never had much inventory because I SOLD EVERYTHING CHEAPLY ~ DUH .

Where The Scrap Metal Goes....

Actually, I don't know where scrap metal goes anymore .

I'm old so it used to mostly go to Japan, maybe China now ? .

When I ran a tiny VW oriented junkyard I had enough $ that I gave the scrap metal (bodies & cores) to a junkyard down the road, the always treated me well and often gave me old VW's they didn't want to be bothered with .

There are steel mills in Arkansas that melt scrap and shredded steel to make new bridge beams ect. At present I have 16 square cab trucks that I am actively parting out. Most where setting and Rotting that I saved from going to the scrapper.

As long as you can sell at a profit you will not go broke. I found the money is made at the purchase. If I can buy at my price then I can sell low enough to leave room for the next guy to get a bargain or resell at a profit. However its hard to make money from folks who don't have any money and swapping nickles get's old really fast

Junkyarding

You're prolly in a good place, selling much needed parts .

I had a VW Shop in a College town and wasn't greedy so I did pretty well .

Most junkyards moan and ***** about never making enough $ then periodically clean out the yard of parts they'd refused to sell affordably, crush everything for scrap value then begin anew .

I just sold parts, few had much $, I sold the hell out of everything and made a decent living .

I don't want to deal with Customers anymore .

I tried the swap meet thing for a while and never made less than $1,000 a day after gas, entry fees and lunch for me and my son....

There too I sold, didn't waste too much time asking high prices .

All I had was a short bed1/2 ton pickup so no huge piles o' stuff to take, I rarely brought home more than a milk crate or two of left overs .

Not sure how much truth there is to this as I am not a conspiracy type person. I was told the state (CA) pays the wrecking yards to crush cars over 10 years old more than they would get for parting out. Meaning they do not want them on the road. Also could be the reason the scrap parts cost more than replacements here.

There's no conspiracy, there was cash for cars, every where not just California .

What I was talking about is ignorance, greed and stupidity .

No one showed a photo of my Dualie sitting out in the yard so life is good.
I've had a number of good friends with wrecking yards over the years and the general consensus on buying rigs for the yard was that they were worth what the engine would sell for on that rig and you got your profit from the rest.

One who seldom paid over 35.00 for any vehicle he bought and usually hauled them away with them being given to him to get rid of them sold fenders and doors and hoods for 25.00 each no matter what they were off except for a few actual specialty rigs. Parts were worth what people would pay cash for that day in most cases but their prices were friendly and their volume was high.

Still vehicles had so many days in the yard before the line they were in got crushed as his real money was in hauling crushed cars.

The operator of a yard in town who is third generation gives me great deals but I have given him maybe 50 cars over the years and he remembers that. I used to buy a lot of cars for what amounts to beer money now and take what I wanted and call his dad and then him to come get the rest with the title laying on the seat.

The "I'll part it out myself" brigade around here wants more for parts than wrecking yards half of the time. You can find deals on bought it for the engine and trans rigs with nice cabs though.
