Going back to original

Hey guys.
I'm either a perfectionist, or maybe just an idiot. I've decided to change my tires/wheels again. This will make the 3rd complete set for my 1968 C10 stepside (swb). I'm trying to get close to the original look with the tires and wheels. The truck may not be much to look at but I'm not satisfied with the look of the wheels and tires I currently have on it. I've decided to go with a 15x6 wheel. I have the 1968 dogdish caps, and the tires should be easy enough. So my question is, what color were the wheels originally? I've looked at many pics. Some look silver, some look off white. Anyone know of the actual color name they used originally?

It depends on the body color of the truck. I believe most were white, but I think some colors used the silver-ish color. Not sure what the rules were

Here’s a discussion at length about factory wheel colors: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=607525

FWIW, my ‘68 originally came with silver wheels. During my resto my paint guy used GM switchblade silver and they look right enough to me.

Are those smoothies, can't use factory caps? I believe '68s and '69 got silver wheels. The painted hubcaps were silver those two years.

This is the answer to my question. Thank you so much. Looks like Argent Silver is what came originally.

These are 16 x 8. I got talked into an SUV all terrain type of tire. They are just a little too much. With these, the question everyone asks is, wow is that a 4WD ?

What I hadn't realized when I bought these "Wheel Vintiques" from Summit is the nubs to secure a hub cap.....are on the INSIDE of the circle. Dog dish caps fit over the circle without any nubs to keep it on. Falls right off. When I called to see what they have that might fit, they were suggesting baby moons. Looking forward to ordering all new and getting it right this time. I'll put the bigger tires/wheels online and just get what I can for them and move on.

That's GREAT. They do look like siblings.

My '68 C/10 Stepside came with ''Argent Silver'' wheels. 17.5x 5.25 rims with 7.00 - 17.5 tires. Bought it used in 1973, so I know it was original.
In 1977, I repainted them White. I liked the look against the original 516 Orange body color. Like an orange CreamCicle.
Had to replace the OEM rims in 2001, I'd worn them out. Went with 16'' wagon wheels and 235/85R16LT tires. White again.

Wheel Vintiques actually makes wheels with outside nubs that fit our hubcaps. They're called Series 62 and are offered in various sizes, even 15x6. Just in case you can't find a set of factory 15x6 steelies.
