Dealer step bumpers

I thought it would be cool to see what cities people in the group have step bumpers from.

Mine is from Blytheville Arkansas.

It's nasty right now, but I plan on restoring it.

Post a pic if you have one!

I had one but could not get the pool and pool deck off of it after Katrina. The dealer supplied step bumpers are geting more rare. Having the name on them and IF the dealer is still in business, most make a big deal out of it if you call them. They like the promo of long lasting etc, etc.

I don't have a step bumper but this one has been for sale in the SF Bay Area on CL for a while.

Here's Mine from a 63. I paint brushed the bumper to see how it would look with the colors I picked for the interior.

Wow....Haven't thought about that Chevy dealership since I was a kid.

Use to drive past that place every day when I lived in Houston.

I'm wondering if this one's home made, or dealer/aftermarket:

Re: Dealer step bumpers

Dunno, but it would seem to be DIY as there isn't really a step to it and no place to mount a hitch ball.

BTW, does anyone know where to get a replacement license plate light for these bumpers?

Don't have one myself but I really enjoy seeing them. Great idea for a thread. Subscribed.

Kimball Motor Company was the dealer that installed the Bardin bumper with the original sale of my truck. It was a plain generic version that didn’t have the dealership name cut into the bumper. At least I can show how much it cost new - $55.00:

There have been a few times I wished I’d left it on the truck (powder coated black) but I didn’t like the way it wrapped around the ends and bolted to the fenders, figuring one bump could crunch both of them:

Yeah, the wrap around would worry me too. Pretty cool to know how much it cost originally. Especially considering they go for upwards of $300 in good shape now.

Re: Dealer step bumpers

That works out to almost $400 in today's money. Seems like a lot for a bumper. Then again, $2534 works out to around $19,000 is today's money. Don't know any brand new trucks that could be bought for that.

The wrap around does provide some protection of the body. At least if you get hit in the side. We finished my son's truck just before his senior year started. 2 weeks later this happened in the high school parking lot. I think it would have been worse without the wrap around in this case.

I was. I still am every time I see it. I guess I knew there was a high chance for something to happen being he is 17. He still has one of the coolest trucks in the high school lot though. We are going to fix it when the weather warms up.

Sorry dantimdad, I did not intend to hi jack your thread.

Am going to use my Step wrap around as soon as I get off my lazy you know what and get it to the powder coater. I need to locate the rubber extrusions for the wrap around.. Any ideas??

dantimdad 01-20-2013 07:42 PM

Re: Dealer step bumpers

ljackson - no problem!

ChuckW - I would trace it and go to a gasket maker.

What color are you going to powder coat it?

I think they are all pretty ugly, but of course Function wins out over form when you want to tow something.

Are they reasonably easy to come by? On Craigslist etc ?

I think that if I cannot do a decent hidden tow ball when we get our truck, that may be the best way to go forward and just use paint to make it look as good as possible.
