70 c10 Ranch Truck

So this has a long story ill do my best to condense. I'm a commercial HVAC guy by trade, now the PM, so i have access to some cool sheet metal tools that will get used throughout the build.

I bought a 69 c10 rolling chassis that appeared to be in decent shape, 496/th400/12 bolt combo. Then i bought a 70 c20 truck with a clean title and beater sheet metal to combine it with. Well the motors bottom end was built right, forged components, decent cam, 4 bolt main, etc. But the previous owner slapped a set of procomp heads on the truck. Well 10-12 miles into my first test ride me and the wife head a decent bang and a bunch of white smoke. I assumed i blew a head gasket. but then i pulled the heads

So at this point this is how the truck sat

https://i.imgur.com/0Nl5ufW.jpg

It sat for a week while i decided what i wanted to do. Well i had a couple mopars previously to this, the last being a ROWDY 69 coronet with a 505 stroker and a 5 spd. i sold that car to buy my wife's ring and always wanted to turn it into a drag car.

So i figured why not drag truck

Ordered a blueprint 632 and got it in 3 weeks, what a turnaround!
https://i.imgur.com/YuKMYjp.jpg

Got a high flow water pump, bigger radiator, reusing the alternator and PS pump from the 496. Have the motor plate mocked in. Built a Cage
https://i.imgur.com/MO8OAlK.jpg

currently only 4 points, to be 6 points after i tie in the forward struts but I'm waiting for headers (3-4 more week lead time :( ) so I can tie that into the cab and frame and motor plate.

Widened the rear fenders so i didn't have to move the links/frame

https://i.imgur.com/bZGMAKB.jpg

I was going to run the rear struts but it honestly just wasn't something i wanted to do quiet yet, want to see what kind of numbers i can run before i go there,

So the truck is at a tranny shop getting the TH400 gone through and a FMVB installed and that brings us up to today

Had a dash plate cut out of 10g aluminum and filled it with autometers and the Fast control center.

Also had a switch panel cut and installed the ignition, lights, and other controls and wired it into a new fuse panel.

Pretty much junked all the factory wiring (it was a mess). Still need to clean/route the EFI wiring as its just sitting on the firewall in space i think the headers are going to need to occupy.

Re: 70 c10 Ranch Truck

Well figured I should update this again, got the engine plumbed and wired, got the new radiator in and it clears by about 1/4. Ended up having to remove the front motor plate, im going to come up with a way to tie in the engine to the forward struts just havent quite got it drawn out yet.

Still lots of work to be done but hearing her run was a huge milestone.

Have to install the electric vacuum pump, finish the cage/tubing, then finish the bed and tubs.

Video of her idling had just brought all the wiring in the cab and hadn't cleaned it up yet

Ouch! You did find the cause of the white smoke! Looks like a lot of work in just a couple of months. Wider fenders look good with the Hoosiers. Will be watching.

Got the bed sheet metal and supports finished

https://i.imgur.com/29Id4a3.jpg?1

This truck will never be out in even a chance of rain (too much power plus slicks) plus I'm hoping the galvanized will give a nice aged/industrial look. Im a sheet metal worker by trade so I'm a big fan of the "industrial" styling.

Got the seat mounts bent up and seats mocked in, didn't take many pictures when i was bending it so ill get some when I pull the seats out to paint the tube.

Did some more work in the engine bay yesterday. Got the front struts welded to the firewall and the frame, moved the fuel pressure regulator to the front of the head, started plumbing everything in stainless AN line from the rubber fuel lines. Ran out so ordered some more. Got the valves covers swapped to run the PVC/vacuum system going to set the relief to 13" once its fully tied into the valve covers, hoping that will still be plenty to operate the vacuum brakes at its currently set to 20".

Finished some more work last night.

Go the fuel system 100% plumbed from tank to engine with stainless braided AN line

Got the battery relocated to the truck bed, set up some distribution blocks under the cab to clean up the wiring a little more.

https://i.imgur.com/gXAisft.jpg?2

Needed some different gauge wire to run the alternator wire back to the disconnect so i should be done with that soon. Have a couple more bars to add to the roll cage, block off plate for the heater core made, and she should be in business

Re: 70 c10 Ranch Truck

Took the truck on a couple shakedown drives. On the first one the two tranny lines I hadnt seen a need to replace split open and sprayed fluid everywhere. Got the truck back and tossed it on the lift and remade those lines in braided stainless.

https://i.imgur.com/8DG23NL.jpg?2

My tranny lost 2nd, 3rd gear. It had it before it sat for the motor swap, im debating even messing with it. I need an upgraded one for the HP anyways so i might just swap the whole unit out.

Not much to report right now

picking up my new torque convertor today and have stage 4.5 FTI th400 sitting in my shop ready to go in, hoping ill get some time to get that swapped over this weekend.

Also got a some rocker stud girdles to toss in before I hit the track.

Still need to finish weld the fenders, might do that before i pull the truck back out of the shop again just so its off the list

Re: 70 c10 Ranch Truck

So the fuel pump with the FAST was not able to keep up with the fuel demands of the 632, go figure.

Got a new pump, running all the fuel supply line in 10an instead of the 6an and, and mounted and installed the fuel cell.

Not really happy with the single -8an outlet on the cell so i ordered a T-fitting to tie both outlets into the single -10an supply.

Put a 100 micron filter pre pump and 10 micron post pump

Re: 70 c10 Ranch Truck

Weighed the pig with 7gals fuel in her and it came out as

DF 1160
PF 1200
DR 680
PR 740

For a grand total of 3780lbs! She's not a skinny girl that's for sure.

New fuel pump is doing its job, 58psi all the time, going to bump the regulator to get an even 60psi so the injectors are maxed.

Had fouled all the plugs out from excess idle, rich tuning, etc, so im going to be leaning the big girl out a bit and seeing what AFR she really wants to live at

Re: 70 c10 Ranch Truck

Finished v2 of the fuel cell to pump plumbing, much happier with it. Also got the fuel breather plumbed. I was going to put a filter right on the cell but I've heard of fuel sloshing out of the roll over valve when the tank is full and didn't want to deal with that

Need to finish weld the fenders, finish the supporting structure of the cage, and we should be off to the races

did some more cage work, redid the back brace, switched from a yellow top to a red top. And got some street radials so johnny law can only complain about the noise.
