Front Lower A Arm Control arm shaft question!
Guys need some help I have a 71, 2 wheel drive c10 that I’m just now diving into rebuilding the whole front end. I got my parts in today and noticed the new control arm shaft for the lower a arm seems to be slightly shorter than the factory ones. As you can see in the picture the threaded part is the same length but the actual center body seems to not go out as far as the original does. Should I be worried. Included in the picture is the part number. MOOG K6147.

Clean your old shaft and see if there is a spacer/ seal on there.

No sign of spacer or seal on the old shaft after cleaning a spot off both ends.

Here is what I have. I do not have my old ones out yet to measure them.

Re: Front Lower A Arm Control arm shaft question!
Thinking about this I don't know that it will matter as long as the bushings go all the way in and the clamps do not run off of the end. Are the new bushings longer than the old ones? Hopefully someone will chime in here that has dealt with this.

Re: Front Lower A Arm Control arm shaft question!
Makes me wonder if they changed the seal design and hence changed the shaft to accommodate this change.

Check the old cap length with the new one. The new one may be a little longer.

Have the same thing going on here. Same Moog LCA shaft, same discrepancy with different sizes of OEM in LCA now? |

Got passenger side lower installed seems to be in there just fine although i'll let the pictures do the talking. Maybe some one with more experience can chim in. I took some pictures of the underside you can still see a little bit of thread but I'm honestly not sure if that's normal or not? I couldn't see when I took the stock ones off with all the grim on them if they where similar or not. take into account that nothing is torqued to spec yet but everything is pretty dang tight and the outer bolts are flush with the arms.

Re: Front Lower A Arm Control arm shaft question!
Looks like the rubber piece doesn't get squeezed as much in between the shaft and the arm? Looks good to me, and when you torque the bolts it should be perfect! Thanks for sharing:)

Re: Front Lower A Arm Control arm shaft question!
That's good news. Mine is coming apart here real soon. But I wish mine was far along as yours is. I don't like to tear things down then have to wait on parts. I like to gather everything I need then obsess about getting it apart cleaned, painted and back together.

Re: Front Lower A Arm Control arm shaft question!
I did a bit of looking around on this as it has been too long since I did mine the last time, nearly 30 years ago...
It looks like the Moog shaft/bushing/seal combo has a slightly different design than the OE version. The AC Delco parts on Rockauto and the QuickSteer parts on RockAuto have a different look in the pictures. In the QuickSteer picture, you can see that the seal is OVER the larger part of the shaft. There is a difference in the look of the threaded ends as to how much is not threaded between AC Delco/QuckSteer and the Moog parts. The center is longer like your OE parts in the AC Delco/QuickSteer versions...Hopefully the link below works and shows the QuickSteer part... https://www.rockauto.com/info/854/EQ..._ANG__ra_p.jpg |
Re: Front Lower A Arm Control arm shaft question!
Older thread I know. But have you noticed any trouble with greasing these bushings? I installed the same moog shafts about 2 years ago on my 72 c10. And I cannot for the life of me get any grease to go into the zerks. I almost bent my grease gun handle trying to squeeze even the tiniest amount of grease into them. I thought I might have put the seals on backwards or something but I'm pretty sure I have them the same as you do in the pictures. I'll have to double check.
