Oil dipstick dry

Hello I rebuilt my 350 and added 5qts of break in oil checked stick, at full. Installed in truck primed and did other stuff and now a few day's later no oil on stick? Checked with 2 inch longer stick and no oil? No puddles or external oil? Block internal guide tube is there. Any ideas. Thanks K.E.N.
Have not started yet.

Stock oil pan or deep sump? Add 1 more quart and check again. The filter holds almost a quart plus a dry engine once primed or run will retain a bit in the lifter valley and internal surfaces.

Thanks It's stock. I think the longer stick would cover a quart diferance.

Original dipstick and tube? Not to many variables there.

Thanks yes that's why I'm confused.
The engine is new to me. It was fine on the stand. Can the stick go above the crank with the tube in place?

Re: Oil dipstick dry

Drain the oil in a clean pan and see how much you get out..
No ..stick cant get above the crank..the tube bottom is below crank centerline...
Most likely you got the wrong tube or stick...or both..
You could stick a tig rod down the tube a d see where the level is also

Not in my experience. Add 1 quart and see what happens. Worst case you can drain it back out.

Thanks all, I will drain and check quantity. My big concern was being over the crank.

This may sound funny, but could the dipstick tube have come out of the hole & the stick going down the outside of the pan?

No the tube has a seat on the top and goes in from the top.
I will drain and check on Tuesday and then post.

Hello, yes George you are correct.
I thought you were talking about the tube in the block, if I had checked that first I would not have dropped the oil.
After installing the engine I had to remove the exhaust manifold and it must have came out of the hole in the block.
Thanks All.

Good to hear you found the issue and it wasn't so bad. :)
