I've posted a few times about this truck but this one should be fairly easy for someone who works with these trucks often.

I have a 66 c10 and I blew the head gasket. I've been working to get the whole engine rebuilt but decided to stick with a new gasket kit and deal with suspension/brakes/steering.

What I found out is that the engine isn't original at all. Casting number is 377127, vin is F1004CCF. That's from a 1976 car with a TH200 Auto transmission. My truck again is a 1966 3 speed on the tree.

My question is, what transmission came stock on these trucks, assuming it was an inline 6 the whole time. May of had a v8 in it stock and was swapped out, I'm not sure. Trying to decode the VIN number to see what engine could have been in it to start.

Need to know what the transmission could possibly be. And if anyone knows more about what vehicle the engine itself came out of.

Trans is likely a Muncie sm318.
The suffix code CCF shows you have a 305.

The truck VIN will not tell you what engine was in it from the factory.

I wish it was a 305. It has an straight 6, not a small block.

Oops!
Read the suffix wrong.
It is a 73-79 six banger.
Likely a 250 as it’s from a car.

Is it an integral head motor or does it have a bolt on intake?

It's a bolt on. Attached is basically the same engine but not mine.

I do think it's a 250cdi with a TH200 (originally) based on this link.

Wish I could find a power steering pump and brackets like you have on your 250. LOL!!

Me too lol. That's just a picture I found. But the post said he pulled it from a 73 chevelle and bolted right up.

I have an old junk yard near that has about 20 classic cars the guy parts out. Including a 454 with matching transmission from a chevelle. Probably going to rummage that place for random parts when I figure out this engine I have.

So no one has any idea what the engine could have came out of? What am I missing that tells me this? Or can I even find out specifically? Would be nice to rebuild the whole thing but I don't have a clue what to look for as far as make and model.

Your casting number says it’s a 73-79 from a chev, olds or Pontiac and your suffix code says it’s a 76.
What more could you want?
Buying parts just ask for 76 250 from one in this list.

More than likely from a Nova, or one of the many clones - Ventura , Apollo, Skylark etc etc

You do not have to know exactly what vehicle an engine came from to be able to rebuild it. You just need the basic idea of cubic inch and a year range.

That was normal over 20 years ago Captain!
These days the 18 year old parts guy needs to know what it came in. Otherwise he’ll come to an instant full stop if you don’t provide a vehicle name.
That’s why I said pick a car from the list.
It’ll help in your parts buying.

I am fully aware of that. Once a person knows a year range, you just pick a year and application, and that's what you tell the parts monkey. All I was getting at is that a person does not have to know exactly what their engine came out of. I see so many people get so hung up on finding out exactly what their engine came out of, make, model, hp rating, etc, when all that detail does not matter especially when it is going to be rebuilt.

Only reason i want to know what it came from is just for my own self interest. I know it doesn't actually matter but more interesting to know.

Actual parts guys that can use that lump on top of their shoulders for something other than a hatrack are few and far between.

If you're in that minority in that profession you must get as impatient as we do with the counter monkeys that can't think.
