Holy Shiyat Greg. Good work. its taken me about 4 days on/off trying to read all of this. today i got off work being too cold out to work (Canadian Standards) so i bunkered down and read the last 50 pages of this. Gotta say, you've brought a truck up from the ground in every way possible. wish i had the time to work on something like you did but that sadly doesnt happen in canada working outside through the winter. Good luck with the project, i will definitely be reading!

so I returned the K-Source Car Mirror (pronounced Too Small) and bought two Truck Mirrors (pronounced Big Ones) site unseen
The new mirrors are well ahem bigger, I like them, but they do have that certain aftermarket je ne sais quoi about them, you know, cheap, light, flimzy, but we don't care about that (yet) they look good now having played the mirror replacement game in the past with my '97 Tahoe (R.I.P. SUV) having chosen to replace with aftermarket rather than OEM, I know that a mirror is not fully tested until you have driven (at speed mind you) with said mirror or mirrors when you drive with them you will look for two things: 1. The Wigglebility Factor - you want this as close to zero as possible 2. No Whistlin' Dixie - that's right some aftermarket mirrors tend to whislte or make noise, you don't want that either, or maybe you do, I'm just sayin' ~ This is me three years in the future (9/22/2018) giving you an update, don't buy these mirrors, they are plastic garbage and they literally fell off on Father's Day while driving home, one on a street the other on the freeway when I pasded a Grayhound bus, lol, these are cheap plastic garbage that vibrated so bad you could hardly see anything out of them in the first place, save your money! ~ |

a huge plus of these handsum devils is the fact that we get to use the stock original holes and we need not drill new ones
so lets take a look at how they mounted I dunno man, I like 'em best, whacha all think? oh yeah, they only set me back $48 bucks for the pair |

Dumbos come from factory in painted. I have a set in white.
Also, IIRC, the dumbos are stainless not chrome. Scuff and shoot! |

I like my mirrors BIG , the 3 point mount "west coast style" ones are fine with me !
of course those aren't found on a regular pickup - but box trucks and flatbeds, ( or a truck towing anything), need them. "Dumbo's" are as small as I need. The sport mirrors look like car mirrors to me , and kind of out of place. |

It's funny it never bothered me with my sport mirrors while driving my truck for years. Then when I got my 87 the dumbo mirrors were great. Never knew what I was missing. Or didn't see.

but first, could someone comment on this stock chrome mirror base, did they come with those two screw holes (the other side does not have them) or was this some sort of [ahem] customization attempt by the previous owner? |

if you recall not too long ago we lowered Rusty and so I figured we would freshen up its suspension so for $165 bucks we picked up this BellTech kit.
Why did we pick this brand as opposed to anything else. 1. The Gabriel shocks you can get from your local parts house did not come in a shorter than stock version, not that I could see anyway. 2. Turns out BellTech is a California company so I wanted to give the local boyz some love. Their website seemed legit, they appear to like / specialize in trucks. so we decided to work backwards and do the rear ones first, the rear shocks are longer here are some numbers for you all
we did not have to raise the truck on jack stands or nothin, we did it with it just parked in the garage eye hole to eye hole with the truck sitting normal on the ground the distance was 17 1/4 inches once removed the old rear shocks compressed were 13 3/4 inches and 23 inches fully extended the new rear shocks were 12 inches compressed and 18 1/4 fully extended Please Note all new shocks came with a new top bolt |

then it was time to do the front shocks, this proved a bit more difficult probably because I have long tube headers on my truck, so on the passenger side we had to remove the header to get it out of the way to free the shock for the frame, otherwise we had no clearance
numbers for the front as the crow flies eye hole to eye hole from top to bottom was 11 1/2 inches old shock collapsed was 9 1/2 inches and 14 7/8 fully extended the new shock weighed in at also 9 1/2 inches collapsed and 14 1/4 extended |

my daddy taught me to never reuse gaskets especially colapsable exhaust manifold / header ones, so we ran out and got some thicker ones this time which meant we needed a bit longer header bolts 7/8ths vs 3/4, so we got those too. Our headers have a nice 1/4 thick flange

I used the same rear shocks on my 93 truck ,have the fronts but have not changed them yet .

we fandangled the header collector gasket as well so we taught the gal at NAPA something new (her words not mine) when we had to buy a new set of those too, do you see how the Hot Rodding game is played yet?
Honestly all this difficulty could have been avoided had I not been running an X pipe but I want to be cool so I have an X pipe on my exhaust, ha ha |

at this time we were Pot Committed sort of speak to the exhaust and remembered that center rear brake rubber line that just loved to hug the passenger side tailpipe so after [ahem] exhausting all options we decided to eliminate the over the rear axle sweeping tailpipes in favor of some short turn downs, ok 45% bendies as the official turn downs only come in 2 1/4 ID Inside Diameter and we needed 2 1/4 OD Outside Diameter so that they would slide inside our Turbo mufflers
Note: we had to notch the muffler ends in order to be able to squeeze down on these tailpipes to keep them from falling out ... and Problem = Solution I like 'em, tell me what you all think? |
