72 chevy swb rearend measurement??

I'm trying to figure out how much to narrow my rearend, so i measured from backing plate to backing plate and came up with 59''??? Does this sound correct to anybody??? I want to run a 20x10 with 4'' backspacing with a 295/40/20. I already mini tubbed the wheel wells. I'm thinking i need to narrow rearend 1.50 on each side??? I have 18x9 with 4.50 backspacing and when i air the bags out it tucks perfectly! Can anybody help.

Re: 72 chevy swb rearend measurement??

59" sounds wide.
I would shove your new 20x10's under the bedsides and measure between the wheel mounting surfaces.
That the most accurate way to get a "total" width that the narrowed rearend needs to be.
Too much money to just guess.

That would require me to remove the rearend to get the wheels where i want correct??

Correct.
I thought you said it was going to be narrowed?

Re: 72 chevy swb rearend measurement??

If you have the early 67-69 housing,... a 20x10 with 5" BS should tuck.
I'm not sure it's worth the price of narrowing the rearend housing and axles for just 1" per side.
(unless you already have the wheels).
I have the wide rearend, (71-72) in my blazer.
I'm running a 20x9.5 with 5.5" BS to clear the bedsides when air'd out.
(bolt in c-notch and bags only)

Will your truck lay out?
Or do you just have bags in place of the stock springs?

yea, it will lay out, I have bridgenotch, tubular traling arms from cpp and relocated bags to inside of freame rails. I'm currently running 18x9 with 4.50 backspace and they tuck up inside the wheel wells pretty tight once all the air is out.

Re: 72 chevy swb rearend measurement??

Then a 10" rim with a 5.5" BS should work.
(or your 10" with a 4" BS and 1.5"/side narrowed rearend like you originally posted)

Sounds like you have it figured out.

Re: 72 chevy swb rearend measurement??

20x8 (5.25" bs) and 20x9.5 (5.5" bs).
245/40's and 295/40's.

Re: 72 chevy swb rearend measurement??

In my 72 Blazer I am running a 22 x 10 with a 4" backspace, I narrowed the factory rearend 2" each side with no rubbing issues...it also has air ride
