How bad is too bad for this filler neck damage?!
 

Yes another gas tank problem. I ordered a stock replacement tank (in cab) from Brother’s back in July. UPS delivered it while we weren’t home, didn’t notice anything wrong until we went to install it and they’d tweaked the filler neck big time. That’s when we realized the box had a huge gash in it. Brothers took care of us and replaced it, only their tanks were out of stock until just this last week. Ugh. We’ve waited since the end of July to get this truck running and what showed up yesterday evening?! Another damaged tank. Same issue, the filler neck is sorta buckled/shoved in because the box was obviously dropped on its end. Then again, I have no idea what this thing looks like without having been dropped of the UPS truck.

It’s not as bad as the first one, but my concern is whether or not this will cause the neck to be too short/the way wrong angle. What is your expert opinion. :) The easy way to find out is to try throwing it in the truck, but I really don’t know that Brothers would appreciate me trying that and then returning it.

I would say that it's tweeked enough that it is not going to fit. I don't know if a guy could stick a large hammer handle in it and bend it back over or not. I guess you would just have to try it. Obviously they need to re-think their packaging.

I wouldn't use it. You paid for an undamaged tank, that's what you should get. That being said, this is absolutely normal practice for UPS. Absolutely the worst shipping outfit there is, I will spend far more money on products to avoid having to deal with UPS. It's also the reason I won't buy anything else from Brothers, they refuse to ship with anyone but UPS (at least to Canada).

I would not try to fix it - if you make it worse, it may not be returnable. But if you let Brother's know this is the second time this has happened, they might decide to package it or ship it differently, or maybe both.

I would put in a claim with FedEx and get my money back. Order a new one from somebody else.

It will leak at the braze. Bend it back, it will leak more. Even the fumes leaking will be enough to sour you.

File a claim. Get your money back. Not Brothers fault, Shippers cause the most damage.

I had the same problem shippers damage. I sent mine back very happy with my new tank. Fit perfect fuel tank neck square in the body opening. Send it back happens all the time.

I will keep it in mind. We’d really like to have a new tank of possible since we already have enough fixes to deal with on this truck, but I definitely appreciate the link.

UPDATE:Brother’s got another tank out to me Saturday and yet again there was damage to the neck. I pulled it out of the box and set it next to my stock tank and it was noticeably tweaked towards what would be the seat area. We’re gonna shop somewhere else for the tank because while it is definitely the shippers fault, Brother’s only put a single wad of paper between the tank and the box edge. I took pics so they can talk to their packaging guys because every other side was well packed but the short end by the neck.

They have been amazing throughout this process and the customer service has been perfect. I will still be shopping there. And if we could spare me taking my other rig for a day I would drive the 4 hours down to their offices and pick up the tank myself. Problem is, my husband’s truck isn’t running right so we’re down to one vehicle with 3 drivers in the house.

I had same problem - shipping damage. Rather than waste time having it happen again 10x over, I took it to a local radiator repair shop and had them rebraze the neck for $30.

My filler neck was also a bit 'long' so while i was at it I had a muffler shop cut an 1" out and re weld it so the cap sits super close to the side of the truck cab.

it's frustrating having to modify 'new parts' but sometimes its just easier that way...

4thgen, what was wrong with your original? If you lived closer to Las Vegas area you could have my factory tank for free. I installed a rear tank and do not need my factory tank anymore, it sits lonely awaiting a new truck to occupy.

My factory tank was/is full of rust and the neck is mangled from people ripping the cap off to steal fuel (shop truck for about 10 years of it’s life).

Third tank is waiting to go back and Brothers has already refunded my money.

Buy one from autozone or oreillys. Local and you can inspect it on the spot.

That’s exactly what I did before I even saw your advice! I went on Spectra’s website to see if there were any local places where I could do just that because we’d heard good things about their fit & finish. There were a few to choose from and we chose Autozone because they had a better price and my hubby does a lot of business with that shop on the job. The hubby was able to swing by on his way home from work tonight, inspect it, and bring it home!!!

For the record they do an amazing job of packing it.

It sounds like you have found your fix but I'll mention I bought a tank from LMC some years ago and was surprised to find it was boxed and that box was in another box. Nice idea. The filler neck was still not lined up with the cab hole but was easy enough to insert a pipe in the neck and tweak it back into place. Lined up perfect then.
