Steering Column Swap Question
My '64 was originally a 6cyl/3spd column shifted truck. The truck will now have a column shifted auto most likely using the OE wiring as it's not in hacked shape from what I remember.
The column was a swap meet purchase & is believed to be a tilt unit from the 67-72 era as it had/has no provision for the ignition switch. I'll need to incorporate a Neutral Safety switch & figured it's worth asking others that have traveled the path for their input. Any insights from your experiences that might prove helpful? |
Re: Steering Column Swap Question
I'm not exactly sure where it's wired in to the stock harness, but my replacement fuse panel from M&H wiring has a neutral safety switch plug. It's two purple wires. I couldn't figure out why my truck would crank but not start until I found that plug and made a jumper wire

Re: Steering Column Swap Question
I might be wrong about this, but from how my truck acted, I believe that the NSS was wired in to the violet wire that runs from the ignition switch down to some other component of the ignition. Seems like what they did was just cut that wire to add a plug. One wire with power into the NSS, the other wire with power out only when the NSS allows continuity.
If that's how it was designed, you would probably just need the plug that works right with your 71-72 NSS |
Re: Steering Column Swap Question
As cwcarpenter68 stated you will need to splice the purple/violet wire to the Neutral Safety switch. You will also have to move the Neutral Safety Switch further down the column closer to the firewall to clear the Steering Column/E brake bracket. Also - installing a newer column gives you the Easy Option of adding 4 way flashers to your truck.
Here's a good writeup with Pics & Measurements how to do it: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=147927 I'm LAZY and figured a little easier way to perform the mods and my easy way of mounting the column in the truck after the mods are done - Posts #4 & 6 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=523901 In fact I'm so damn Lazy I plan on adding an Emergency Brake setup out of a 71 Cadillac so when I drop the truck into Drive or Reverse it release the Parking Brake automatically. I got the Caddy Parking Brake assembly - I just need to get off my Lazy A$$ and install it in my truck. |

I briefly glanced @ the initial page of the 1st link. I'll go back tonight & do some thorough reading but looks like there's excellent info being shared. Again.... Much appreciated for sharing the info. |
