The GMC V6

I am going to build my Dad a motor for his Christmas/B-Day gift.

Besides the usual small blocks I found out again about the GMC 305 V6. As it has never been in a vehicle I own.

The engine will go into a Model A hot-rod, and my Dad is fine with a 283 or 305 on power. As he likes the sound of a V8 revving up.

Would the GMC V6 fit into a Model A easily due to its wider angle?

By chance how does one sound with straight pipes?

I think it would be cool since it is not a belly button engine, and he is game on it.

Thoughts?

If he likes the sound of a V8 revving up, why would you build him a v6?

He had a turbo Model B engine that sounded more like a Ford 7.3 IDI, and he misses it.

Plus it would be different

They are awesome truck engines but they aren't really fast revving or high revving. I never thought they sounded cool either and the one we had had dual exhaust. I would much rather have a 283 in a hot rod.

The revving or lack of it is fine. I can regear the axle of needed.

Does the engine sound labored, just plain odd, and or not right?

This was a option since my dad saw one, and thought it looked cool with repop tartan valve covers.

I have a line on a 305 with low miles I could get. Then toss in a better cam, and regasket it up.

It sounds deep because of the relatively large displacement per cylinder. It sounds odd to most people because of the fact that you get 6 pulses per revolution rather than 8. I had duals with glass packs on mine, and I liked the sound.

Here's one with a stock (but old) exhaust:

That sounds pretty decent. When I get my 83 back on the road I will make a decision with my dads input.

Either way it will be pretty unique when he drives around.

They pull like crazy, but they don't rev much at all. They're definitely unusual and they're about as bulletproof as an engine can get.

It will be cool and unique for sure. A lot harder to get parts for, but very cool. Another unique thing is that the spark plugs are located on the intake side of the rocker cover, letting you use shorter plug wires and keeping them away from the hot exhausts (factoid from Wikipedia).

Oh, and look for the ones with plaid (I kid you not) rocker covers. They were a thing. Very unique.

Yeah, when I got my first one I was really confused because the spark plugs weren't where I expected them to be.

In that A -bone, I would run a 283 chev....or if you want to be correct....A flat head v-8 Ford , would be the ticket. Take a Merc crank, offset grind to stroke it as far as you can....use the ford rods. Then bore the block as far as you can. Many speed parts are still there for that old Ford. Other than that, I feel that the old GMC 6 , will be heavy on the nose , of that a-bone. Just my thoughts.....Longhorn

He has 2 or 3 flat heads, but won't swap them in. Claiming some bigger idea.

The 305 weighs about 100 pounds more. Which is not to bad if my dad starts to use radial tires.

I am almost done getting my 83 back on the road, and then I will let him decide. After Halloween

My guess is your dad is in his 80's? If he is anything like my dad was before he passed there won't be changing his mind:)

V6 Heavy engine..... make a big block feel light. I have a rear cross member, front mounts for V6. And a power steering pump hydroboost that was on it. Free u pay shipping.

Re: The GMC V6

The V6 fell through. He stole another 350 engine from me, and bought another flat head to use. It was a cheap core so I would of sold it either way, but he traded it for a couple of rims I think.

Now he says he needs my 383 LT1 short block, but has no car for it. I told him buy the 59 Chevy truck you have had your eyes on. Then I will build it.

Plus I have not seen a V6 listed for a minute.

Re: The GMC V6

If was gonna build a six, I would use a Chevy 292 straight six before a GMC V/6. Still unusual and more fun.

Re: The GMC V6

I'll bet that GMC V6 is 3/4 of a 409. That's why it looks so cool.

While a great motor. It is not symmetrical for a hotrod.

Re: The GMC V6

Just my thoughts...An aluminum block LS would be the fit (narrow), & lite on the nose of an old A-bone! That lite weight A bone wont need more than a stock 5.3/5.7 . Longhorn:chevy:

biketopia 05-04-2022 07:25 PM

Re: The GMC V6

An LS4 would be the ticket. It's a 5.3 out of a front wheel drive car, is a narrower block vs a your run of the mill truck 5.3. Look up LS4 king on social media.
