Depending on the application, it could be a step-up solenoid used to "step-up" the engine idle speed when the AC compressor kicks in. Could also be used as an anti-dieseling solenoid.. It's used to set the base idle. When the engine is running, the solenoid is engaged and holds the throttle at idle.. Turn off the engine, solenoid de-energizes and throttle closes...

They all mount basically the same. The function (step-up or anti-dieseling) is determined by the need. For step-up, the power to the solenoid comes from the AC electrical circuit. For anti-dieseling, the power comes from the ignition switch.

I can't tell from the picture whether or not, the vehicle has AC.

No AC. This is great, I can chase down where the wire goes and confirm.

The solenoid is pretty grungy, does it work?? You can test easy enough.. Make up a jumper with a 10 amp inline fuse holder.. Connect one end of the jumper to the POS post on the battery, and connect the other end to the terminal on the solenoid.. Touch the solenoid housing to the negative post on the battery. the plunger should jump out about 1/4" - 1/2" and resist pressure to push it back in.. When disconnected from the battery, the plunger should retract.
