It is the difference of a 15 degree bead seat on the 22.5 tire and a 5 degree bead seat on 22" wheels. I work at a tire shop and would rather work on the big heavy 445/50R22.5 than low profile 22" anything. I've done some machined alcoas and the tire kept wanting to dismount off the other side of the wheel. Plus the machining wasn't perfect so it's a good thing you didn't have just any machine shop do it.
