Having a driveshaft shortened should be no where near that expensive. You should be able to get a completely new driveshaft built for $300-350. It's been years since I have had one shortened, so I don't know what the current cost is around here.

Check out LostMy65's build thread. He bought a new driveshaft for his truck and the cost wasn't that bad.
