I have a longbed with a stock 283 and 3 on the tree w/3.08's. I find it to be a great all around set up. I don't know if the old 3 speeds came with different gear ratios or not, but it would be worth researching before doing an axle swap. Once you know what you have to work with, you can then use various online calculators to determine your launch ratio and what your rpms would be as you "row thru the gears"
