On my 68 LS/4L60E swap I did the cut the "stock" trans dip stick and tube. I filled the trans, checked the fluid level and then as said above cut the tube and dipstick. Took a file and marked the fill levels on the dip stick.
I have used Lokar on other LS swap projects with good success but I think they are a bit overpriced.
