Re: Tired Straight-6, upgrade to V8?
I have a very similar truck. 1963 Short Fleet. It had a 230 when I got it. Toyed with the idea of an LS or a Gen 1 SBC. I decided to keep it old school and swapped in a 292 “big block” six. I freshened the motor but kept stock parts, added cast iron headers, and an offy intake. I also swapped out the three on the tree for a T5. The truck has 3.73 rear gears. It will pull gentle hills in fifth, steep hills it will slow down a bit. In fourth it will climb anything. Cruises at 70 very comfortably. It’s a nice cruiser that idles at 500 RPM and pulls smoothly from there. Perfect motor for a truck but not intended to race your friends….
If you haven’t seen it already, check out Twelve Bolt Tom for inline six parts. He is seriously into these motors.
