Re: Pic Thread: Not Just El Caminos

It's VW that named that model the Caddy. I guess it didn't catch on. There were never a whole lot of them compared to Rabbits, so everyone knew what you meant if you called it a Rabbit pickup.
The idea back then was simply mpg with most everything. Vettes were gutless, but they had more power to start with. That VW diesel was conceived in that era, so good power was never a concern from the git-go. Those things were gutless. Tractor Trailers running 4-way flashers (-40 mph) would be passing them at the top of the mountain.

The Karmann Ghias were around since 1955, so there were plenty of cheap older ones around. I wanted one as old as my Bug and if you could afford an old bug you could afford a Ghia. They were seen as much an odd little car as a a sports car. They weren't exactly accepted as a racy sports car. They weren't a car you saw raced. It was a known fact they had the same power as a Bug and the Bugs were seen as the slow poke on the hiway. You could find a Porsche 1600 Super for just a little more. Mostly you were looking at higher operating costs compared to VWs. That's the only reason I felt I couldn't afford one. I had opportunities I almost went for.
