In my long bed I've replaced two in 33 years and >50K miles. And both were done because the rubber seal was cracked. So I wouldn't spend money to convert unless you do have problems.

If you did install a new bearing, make sure the u-joints are properly "phased". I can't remember offhand how to do it, but it's in the service manual and maybe even in a Haynes manual.
