Yeah, I think the owner of martin's paint is a member here? He replied to my wetsanding question a couple months ago and said the same thing you did... why oh why did I need to have the sparklies?
I now wish I hadn't gone metallic, but NAPA didn't charge me "extra" for it, so I said, what the heck, why not?

I like how it came out too. It should line right up with the tanks filler neck. This could only be done on a fleetside or a stepside with shaved markers (and of course original 67's). Not something someone would notice right away, but that's what I like about it.
