I think you will find the taper is still different, you can verify the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton part numbers on Rock Auto -- always loved their catalog and I do still order some from them.
Probably useless info but back before this forum had vendors with custom parts/adapters/etc and most on here were mechanics, machinist, welders, and fabricators. One method to use 71-87 spindles on a 65-70 was to rethread the 71-72 outer tie rod end from 11/16 RH thread to 5/8" LH thread. There are old threads on this for reading pleasure. This forum started in 1999 and like you I became a member in Feb 2004 ( was 53 then) and I am old and recall some things sometimes.
I still have my 5/8 LH die but we are about 1400 miles apart. 8-)
