It may only be the 3/4 ton chassis were available as the older T400 just like the pickup trucks. It wouldn't surprise me to find that the 2500 Suburban was available in only T400 or both T400 & T800 chassis.

GM did this odd mix of builds with the CK T400 and RV squarebodies from 1988-1991. The SUVs just plain didn't get a facelift til 1993. The dually, 3500, and 2500 pickup was available with either body style through 1991.

The MD chassis has seemed to use the older cabs past production of the light duty trucks. 67-72 cabs into the mid 70's and round headlights into the 1980's. My guess would be that commercial users likely don't care about a facelift so there's no push.
Yes! I told this woman that I was working for at the time that she should buy a 3/4 ton Suburban for towing heavy horse trailers but the dealer talked her into a half ton. At least it was a better choice than the original Grand Cherokee (ZJ ?) that she was using

That said, she let me drive it a short distance and it was impressively solid
