They were a standard for me, too.
I ran those mesh stone guards on a couple trucks, '69 Power Wagon and a '71 Blazer. The chrome won't rust unless it gets wet
. I painted mine black. I think the deal is there is to be "no obstruction" to headlamps, nada, zip. Do they interfere with headlamp performance? Nope. I never had any issues over them. They are effective. Not that I've ever had a headlight break from stones.
