My 87 R10 6.2/700R4/3.08's gets 23mpg average, mixed driving - 5 miles city, 14 miles highway, 16 miles country (a stop or turn every 3 miles or so), and 2 miles dirt.
It gets right around 28 at 56mph - just need to keep it in OD and the TCC locked up.
BTW that's at 216, 000 miles, and as far as I can tell it's hasn't been rebuilt.
