Somewhat similar to that but not so shiny and fancy. Mine looks like the cover might be crimped or something at the base (towards the engine) to hold it on to the core of the sending unit.

So apparently the sending unit on my pickup is not GM original? I guess that figures ... the guy that had it before (I bought it from his ex-wife) was pretty wacky, used wrong parts and put things together wrong on all sorts of stuff. For instance, I had it a little before I discovered that the main through bolt was missing from the motor mount on one side

I just thought there must be some sort of trick to it that I was not seeing. So I guess I will order a new sending unit and hopefully find a female connector that I can crimp or splice into the end of the existing broken wire <sigh>
