When Smokey was busting everybody driving over 55 MPH, back in the day, they were essential. Now the XK band is obsolete. Cops are using more sophoistiated radars [and laser], speed limits are higher, and either the X or the K band is the same frequency as the automatic sliding doors at every convenience mart and bulk gas station. So they beep every time you pass one, even when you're on the street.
They look vintage, but they're no longer effective in their primary role.
