Basically what happens is the wiring and starter gets heat soaked causing the resistance in the circuit to rise until the voltage at the solenoid is insufficient to operate the plunger. I resorted to a Ford solenoid on my 70 ss396 chevelle after trying everything. It was the ultimate cure.
Strangely my 70 ss with an LS6 and my buddies L78 69 camaro never had a problem starting.
