Well, w/o images we can only speculate on things.

My logic is the bracket (upper mount) has to sit flush on the 'pad' of the original x-member. If trimming more from the x-member pad allows the bracket to sit flush & still allows adequate room for the hardware/mounting flange, I would trim it off.
