dont feel stupid, our old engines have the timing pointers spot welded to the cover....I didn't use the plug they gave me for the dip stick hole...I plugged the one I didn't use on the passenger side with a 3/8" bolt,cut off the threads and used the smooth part of the bolt with the head on it, about 3/4" long ,used gasgacinch to glue it in...the plug they give you will fall right through into the engine on the passenger side....you will need to use your oil filter adapter and fuel pump rod and plate from your old engine also....let us know when you get it in and running....
