71gmc: 95&96 dash are the same save for the obd connector. 97up have the airbag or pocket (2500/3500). The transmission isn't that bad - it's mostly just different electronics and they don't die quickly if you take care of them, like adding a cooling fan and using an all aluminum high quality radiator.

One of the more interesting things is the interface to the PCM and other computer controls. It's ALDL serial datalink using the 16 terminal J1962 "OBD II" jack instead of the 12 terminal North America ALDL jack that GM used up to 1994.

You can talk to it with a Tech2.
