What should I have in my junkyard visit tool bag?

So on my trip to NC/SC, what tools and gear should I put into my bag?

I am thinking now:

1). Heavy clothing for dealing with the cold and briers...

2). Spider-killing spray.

3). Pistol with buckshot for any dangerous snakes.

4). Screwdrivers.

5). 3/8 and 1/2 drives.

6). flashlight (I wear one on my belt 24/7 anyway)

7). Safety glasses

8). cushion for sitting

9). Overalls.

10). Some break free.

11). What else?

I carry a metal pipe for use as a breaker bar. Utility knife for cutting out glass trim. A hammer. Leather gloves. Cordless drill or grinder for stubborn bolts. I'd say pistol is overkill for the snakes but I like to chase after them for fun (not lucky enough to see a live eastern diamondback yet).

Re: What should I have in my junkyard visit tool bag?

Torx wrenches if your pulling anything off a GM. The accessory stuff mirrors tail gate catches etc. are torx. Mostly medium and large but have them all. I also always bring a 1/2 drive breaker bar if I'm taking anything large and or rusty. The wish list tool would be a dewalt battery powered angle grinder, used to be the hero in my bag but no yards will let you use them around here anymore.

I would leave the spider spray and guns at home. Even though I can't convince my wife, either of those critters are way more scared of you than you are of them. I guess it might depend on the location, but firing a gun in a junk yard could create all sorts of havoc.

Agree with the leave the gun at home idea, I have a 8in survival knife I use for cuttin any hoses that may still be there, so if I see a snake id just pin it n kill it or pick it up and fling it

Toilet paper and duct tape for those unexpected boo boo's. This was a 23 pound flywheel that caught my hand as it fell to the ground at a pick and pull place... which I was able to show to everyone because I... brought my phone!

Re: What should I have in my junkyard visit tool bag?

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to make a list and pick up the suggested tools I do not have.

If anyone else has any ideas, please share!

Guys, I never leave home without a firearm or two. (I carry nonlethal options as well). The buckshot would be the only change to my routine.

I don't know anything about "Torx" wrenches....would this be a good option?

Re: What should I have in my junkyard visit tool bag?

a small pocket note pad, pen and a sharpie. that way when you hide parts for your next trip you can write down what trunk they are in, also use full for taking notes.
if you have room the best thing besides your tool bag is a utility wagon or at the very least your kids red wagon that way your not stuck using the lots carts if they even have them

Re: What should I have in my junkyard visit tool bag?

Hand wipes. I have a small pack I carry so I don't get the DD or whatever I'm in dirty/greasy. They're a hand cleaner style. Handheld wire brush. I usually carry pair of gloves for handling heavy parts and sheet metal, and a pair or two of disposable gloves for gooey stuff. Check with the yard on your way in, most around here have parts vehicles separated into different areas. You don't need to look thru a dozen Hondas to find one truck.

Re: What should I have in my junkyard visit tool bag?

Toilet paper cannot be underestimated. A few years ago, while doing the restoration on my '78, we were out at a parts yard and the older trucks were a good quarter mile in the back of the yard.

One minute I'm fine, the next minute I'm doubled over with no warning of a major blowout. Knowing I probably couldn't take ten steps, let alone walk back a quarter of a mile, and frantically trying to avoid something that had not happened to me since 1969, I spotted an old Chevy ice cream truck with plenty of room in the rear of the truck.

Needless to say, I went home without any socks that day, but grateful and appreciative of how effective time management in mere seconds can help avoid life's embarrassing moments.

Re: What should I have in my junkyard visit tool bag?

Gosh this is good stuff!

Keep it coming!

I learned the hard way how valuable safety glasses can been when I took the front clip off of a 1967 Chevy C/10 in a junkyard in 1998....big piece of rust landed right in my eye! Thank God my dad drilled into me the necessity of carrying a handkerchief!

Making a list right now of all these great suggestions.

Re: What should I have in my junkyard visit tool bag?

Consider what you want to pull. Then practice on the truck
Although, I can understand wanting to look at everything. If you can safely lock up things, I tend to walk the yard first and determine what I REALLLLLLLLLY have to get and what can wait for the next person. Then go back for my tools or certain tools.

Dollie, shopping cart, wagon, couple friends, pack mule, home depot helpers, anything that can help carry s***.

Re: What should I have in my junkyard visit tool bag?

Don't forget bungy cords, sometimes they can be the third hand. A hatchet, cause somethings just need a good hacking at. Couple of ziplock bags, for all that little stuff, that you actually plan to pay for. If you got room for a small scissors jack, and even a jackstand they sure beats rummaging around for one when you need to crawl under that one vehicle they do not have off the ground. Also might want to bring some chisels, for when the battery on the grinder is dead because you used it for everything that you did not need but thought i could use this someday. Typically i bring more than is required, then scope out the yard, return to the vehicle and get the tools i need. Helps to limit impulse purchases, and sometimes you can negotiate the price before you wasted your time taking it off and the guy at the counter thinks its worth more than the cash you brought.
