Turning odometer back to zero
My original clock says only about 700 miles. I hooked a drill to it to experiment. Will this damage the speedo while the needle is bouncing off the stop peg?

Pm sent about how to reset odometer. I had sent this to another board member and I tried to post it but don't know how. It is too much typing so I hope it works.

Lamar, Your PM worked - thanks. I was hoping I wouldn't have to take the drum deal out so I am still curious if just using a drill for only a few hundred miles backward will damage the speedo.

I'm wanting to start fresh with my rebuilt 383. So, what's the process to zero out the odometer? Mine is at a little over 80,000.

Here you go this is the way I do it.If you have the odometer wheel out just hold it in your left hand with fingers holding the first metal tab(left to right) and turn the gear with other hand until you have 9 in the ten thousand place. Then just keep holding the first metal tab and now hold the second metal and turn until you have 99***. Then you do the same for the rest until 99999. Then I just reinstall the wheel and then turn the speedo by hand a few turns until 00000. Hope that helps. If not let me know.

Well, I only spun it with a drill for a little while, but it took .1 off so I figured if I kept it up it would continue. That's why I wondered about the bouncing speedo needle. And, yes, I've seen Ferris, but this ain't a Ferrari (or whatever Ferris' budies Dad had).

I don't know about damaging the speedo, but turning it backwards will take miles off the odometer. Learned that one in high school from a gal that had racked up a bunch of miles on daddy's Corvair one night, so she went out in the country and started backing around the mile roads. She was doing okay until the odometer turned up all 9s and went clunk.

I tried turning my speedo back for about a week with no luck, I pm'd Lamar and he walked me through it, took about 5 minutes after that.

Real easy thanks Lamar....one question though. That little piee of plastic/paper that is holding the little metal tabs in place, you can discard that right? Right? Right? I broke it.

Either a speedo shop, or a junk yard. If you do the junk yard route, then remove it from a newer vehicle. It won't be as brittle.
I do this a little more than once a week at work on the P/30 rebuild program we have. That is one of my jobs on it is to roll back the miles. I MIGHT have an extra locking strip in my tool box...I'll take a look see today. |

I have made a few out of clear plastic from a hobby shop. Longhorn Man is right you need it. Ijust cut a small peice and cut the slot out and it works pretty good if you can get it cut close.

yeah, the thing was so brittle as soon as I even touched it it snapped. I will fab one up in the shop tonight. I think I may use a thin piece of clear plastic or so. I thought it was just a piece of paper the factory used to keep the numbers set once they installed it or so...my bad...thanks!

OK...fabbed up a new piece from a sheet of plastic (form cover). Cut it out with an exact-o-knife to contour the tumblers and bam, perfect fit. Nice and snug, and ALOT stronger. I'm sitting pretty at 000000!
