I am ready to put in windshield.Do I need to run a bead of sealant around lip before I put it in? What are your experiences?

I have never seen them run a bead of sealant.I have had 2 windsheilds installed and that's the easyest way out.They run the risk of breaking it and the price has always been less than the cost of two windsheilds.

have to agree.... once broke a back window trying to put it in, I let the pros do it from then on... they break it, they replace it free...

SOLVER, just a suggestion, but i think that you might have wanted your signature to look like this. You've got at almost right. All you have to do is move the "/" into the last set of brackets like this[/list]

Installing windshields in these things seem to be best left to the pros. We put one in my blazer and it was an all-day affair. The friend that helps me out on my blazer has built more show cars/trucks then he can count and he said he would never put a windshield in one of these again. Now he is building a 72 SWB and he again did the windshield himself. He said it was just as bad as mine and repeated he will take it to the pros if he had to do another. Now these windshields did have the chrome trim to deal with and that makes it so bad. It may not be so bad if you don't have the trim. Any way you go - Good Luck.

I let the pros do mine last week, it took about 3 minutes to get out and about 30 minutes to put the new one in. I'm glad I didn't try to do it myself. Lucky for me who ever put the one last one in didn't use sealant so they were able to use my original gasket and trim.

Thanks I'll try it without sealant. I put my last windshield in a year ago all by myself. I used a strong cord in the groove. It took me about an hour. Wasn't fun alone but I thought it went pretty well. Now you guys got me scared. Maybe ignorance is bliss.Also thanks Jason that has been that way since I joined board.

I would have the seal that you want there when they come. (standard, or bright) They will want to use your old one, and that is kinda lke takin a shower and puttin on dirty underwear.

As a matter of fact I wear dirty underwear every day and I love it! Kidding! Really, I had to have them use the old one because the morons who painted my truck didn't remove the windshield and putting a new gasket in wouldn't have layed down the same and would have shown the old paint plus the old gasket was still in great condition. They also tried to tell me that they couldn't get the gasket with the slit for the trim and of course they didn't belive me when I told them I could get it no problem for $39.99 so I told them to just use the old one or forget it. It went in perfectly.

Jst keep an eye open for leaks.
Generally, they will deny the existance of the slited one (like dion said) and the seal they bring will be of poor quality. Again...GENERALLY...not always.

My son and I put one in his 70 pu. We tried 3 times before we were able to successfully get it in. 2 1/2 hrs later. Would of been a second tow to the glass shop with more the a 2 hr proceedure. We did use the rope trick with the rope overlap at the bottom and we finally had to soap up the gasket to let it work around the edges the square corners are a bear. Push pull and scream and it was in. No sealant No leaks. Ed ke6bnl

The windshield is not a hard job to install. Alwaysinstall the big side first in this case it will be the top. (square corners) Make sure the lip is in good shape and the gasket and like someone else mentioned over lap the cord,making sure you lube the gasket well with spray lube.

A TRUSTED friend can be great help to help put slight presure on the glass from the other side.

i put my windsheild in, my wife helped me it had the chrome. soaped it up real goog used the cord trick 2 hrs later put the back one in . was not easy ,but i really like doing that kind of stuff . that was my first time. just be careful dont hurry and keep smiling at your wife no matter what ! if you know what i mean. she was scared to death.
