71 Blazer Starter Issues

Here is the info.

I will bring my new 71' Blazer home on Saturday. It has set up in a garage for 3 years. This is how I plan to start it for the first time. Any advise is welcome.

1. Drain fuel tank, and add fresh gas.
2. replace all fluids.
3. Pull plugs and add ATF to cylinders.
4. Disconnect fuel line at carb.
5. Crank until fresh fuel is seen without spark plugs installed.
6. Replace plugs and crank it up.
7. If float is stuck, tap on carb to release.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did all the above today. He said he has had starter problem. I replaced starter and cranked without plugs to make sure everything was free. Motor turned over OK but had a starter whine. Like not meshing with flywheel right, but still turned motor OK. Manually turned flywheel, teeth are OK. Installed plugs and tried to crank. Not hitting at all, just grinding. Not sure if he had the right starter in the first place, or maybe a shim issue? He had stripped one bolt for the starter and installed a stud w/nut for one starter bolt.

Re: 71 Blazer Starter Issues

more info........

Starter is engaging all right. I am not sure about the right starter. The parts house looked it up by application and the one they wanted to sell me would not have bolted up. Totally different mounting, it mounted vertical, not horizontal. Even the aluminum option was different than the starter I took in. One of the bolt mounts was to thick.........Delco Reman starter. New Interstate battery.

Re: 71 Blazer Starter Issues

A starter on an auto tranny will be different from the starter on the bellhousing of a manual transmission. The manual has 3 bolts, one coming from the back and 2 from the front and they're horizontal. I think it's the automatic with the 2 vertical bolts.
Actually the starters are the same but the nosecone differs.

Starter issue solved: Went to a gear reduction starter, with 9.8mm starter bolts. Ground down mounting surface on starter and all is good.

Cranked for the first time this afternoon and timing was way advanced. Little carb fire and marshmellows roast. Adjusted timing and it runs like a spotted ape.

My son and I went on a cruise run to Seabrook and had a blast.

All is good!
