71 SPID Decode Needed

I am painting the front of my glovebox and figured this would be a good time to decode the SPID. I know that there are several members on here are great for this info. Sorry for the poor pics.

Re: 71 SPID Decode Needed

That's good to know. It looks like my truck has been changed even more than I had thought. It currently has a 350 and an open 3.08 (according to the gear caluator) coil spring rear.

To be clear, your SPID does not list an optional engine transmaission or ratio. So by default a 307 engine, 3-speed trans and 3.73:1 gears are its indicated build.

The engine might be a 307 under a 4 bbl intake. If you are not sure check the casting number, date and engine assembly numbers.

The rear gears could have been changed anywhere along the line even at the dealership. Check you axle codes if you really want to know more.

You truck (as built) had the default coil spring rear suspension. In addition it had the HD coil and the helper leaf spring options that contacted the trailing arms behind the axle.

Re: 71 SPID Decode Needed

Thanks for the info I found the engine code from the block. It says:
V0825DMB
199403799

It looks like its a later engine.

WOW, Not what I expected.
Mind you later numbers are not my strong point but I try to have a good database for such an issue.
So...
That 199403799 looks like a VIN code, was it stamped near to the engine assembly code?
If so it appears to be for a '79 Oshawa built vehicle with a 267!
The DMB suffix code comes back as a 79 L-39 267 or an 81 LM-1 350.
Time to check the casting numbers, in fact all the numbers carefully.

Re: 71 SPID Decode Needed

The VIN code was stamp directly under the engine assembly code. It pulls like a 350 which is what the POs claimed it was. It also has 3998991 heads which according to my book is possibly the original 1971 heads. I am starting to think that this engine was pieced together at some point.
