Swapping 5 lug 51/54 car drums to TF spindles.

Yuppers, I have a question that I don't have the full answer for.

For those who have done it. When you swap the 51/54 car drums to a TF do they fit right up (with the right wheel bearing) or do you have swap backing plates too as with the AD swaps. I am getting conflicting info.

48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six.
71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

All you have to do is swap the drums.

That's what I thought but wasn't positive. Thanks.

you may have to swap the wheel bearings over to TF style.

Re: Swapping 5 lug 51/54 car drums to TF spindles.

I had that on my 48, the inner race that went on the spindle was a different Id than the car bearing was. The ball bearing was the same but the inner races had different ID. I've got an axle with the smaller Id inner bearing surface diameter on the spindles now. I don't know what a friend of mine took it out from under when he swapped an MII under it. He just said that I needed it and loaded it in my truck one day.
