Re: unbelievable

Saw a story on this. The big problem now is disposing of 18,000 dead cows. One of the regulators said something about "We have classes on carcass disposal but not on how to do mass graves."

Re: unbelievable

No joke. It’s not as simple as just digging a big hole. The gases from decomposition can cause real problems.

Re: unbelievable

i saw a couple yrs ago ,when the coronas hit, that when hogs got to the point that it cost more to feed them than they could sell them for, they buried them in silage.. a couple weeks later, after going thru the heat of silage, there was nothing left of them..
but 18000 is a extreme number

Re: unbelievable

This has story has been discussed a bit over on newagtalk. Supposedly, a piece of manure handling equipment started the fire. What doesn't make sense though, is how the methane gas that's being blamed for the fire had accumulated to a flammable level. It would have been lethal to the cows at much lower concentrations than were needed for a flash explosion.

18,000 cows at normal freestall barn stocking density would require a 45-acre barn. I don't know if these cows were housed in freestalls, or whether they were dry-lotted, though.

The size is not that extreme. I visited a 19,000 cow dairy in Oregon in 2008, when it was claimed to be the single largest dairy in the US at the time. There's larger ones around now.

Another puzzler, is how no more people were injured than what were. With 18,000 cows, you would have whole teams of people working with those cows around the clock. It would be pretty rare to have no one in the barns.

This is about two-tenths of one percent of the national herd of dairy cattle. I doubt any price jump will show up.

I wouldn't mind though if the prices went up a bit. I'm milking 45 Jerseys myself, and the milk check is never enough.

Re: unbelievable

I’m thinking they probably had a methane digester problem. Terrible loss. Doubt if this will have much effect on the price a dairyman gets but the middleman will use it as an excuse to make a few bucks.

These days it seems like Big Government and Big Business is looking for any excuse to extract more funds from We the People.

BTW...the comments section of that article ( Fox ) appears to be completely full of conspiracy theorists stating that this was definitely an attack on our food production. Not sure I agree with that though.

Re: unbelievable

Could they kick up enough hay dust or something to add to the methane and create the explosion? I know it can happen with stuff like coal, flour and corn dust.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I do not trust anything where money is involved. Big business and the government will do anything to to get more money from your pocket to add to their stack.

Examples.

A big oil refinery shuts down for maintenance and creates a "so called' shortage. The price of fuel goes up. That same refinery opens back up and the price of fuel never goes back down. Hmm, makes you wonder?

The price of eggs has skyrocketed. Does anyone think that they're going to go back down?

This might have been an accident. Might not. I don't know. But I have a feeling that the price of dairy products and meat is going to go up.

Maybe the Vegans on their electric bikes aren't all that crazy after all.
