Re: removing old seam sealer
hey red in the summer ill be doing mine over also and considered using a heat gun but would like to hear what others have used before i try it for fear of lifting the paint, perhaps a chisel will work and heat gun the remains ?

Re: removing old seam sealer
It will almost definitely lift the paint because it should be UNDER the paint ... i used a wire brush on a cordless drill.

Re: removing old seam sealer
I used a wire wheel on a electric grinder. It cleaned it out fast. But I was not worring about protecting the paint.

Re: removing old seam sealer
I just did this last weekend on my '66. I used a screw driver as a chisel and just tapped it along; knocked all the stuff right out. Hit it with a wire wheel and looked pretty good.

Re: removing old seam sealer
I used a stiff gasket remover knife and went along the edge of the vertical lip and "cut" it free from that edge. Then I came in flush with the roof panel and basically cut it out in large chuncks. After I got most of it out, I came back in with a twisted wire wheel disc (not the cup style) and removed the left over. Make sure you have a full face shield when doing this. Overall wasn't very hard or time consuming... unlike stripping the old paint off.

Re: removing old seam sealer
3M makes a paint and rust stripper wheel; sort of looks like a Scotch Brite pad on steroids. They sell for about $6 each at most paint/body/auto stores. I use it in a drill and have had good luck with seam sealer, paint, rust, undercoating... Watch the direction you spin the drill compared to a metal edge or you will shred the wheel quickly.
